Obituary: Alice J. Bachison, 94 of Yakima, passed away on Wed. 8, 2015 at Arbor House. By her side were her daughter, granddaughter, great granddaughter and one of her caregivers. Alice was born in Tacoma, Oct. 4, 1920 to George and Mary E. Borys. The family moved to Yakima from Tacoma when Alice was 12 years old. She attended St. Michaels Episcopal Church as a child and while raising her own family. She graduated from Yakima High School in 1938 1/2. In 1941 she married Michael A. Bachison. Together they raised three girls, Donna, Geraldine and Carol. In Dec. of 1955, her daughter Donna A. Bachison Ryan passed away tragically in a car accident. Her father George Borys passed in 1963, her mother Mary E. Borys in 1964 and her husband Michael A Bachison in 1967. Alice worked for Teamsters Union in their office before going to work for Yakima Police Dept. in 1951 for 32 years, retiring in 1983. When Chief Robinson asked if she knew how to operate the switchboard she told him yes after thinking how hard can it be. She had never worked a switchboard in her life! She later became Police Matron. Her office was on the 4th Floor of the old Police Dept. above City Hall which also housed women prisoners and the break room for the employees of the dept. Since YPD did not have women police officers, she would accompany officers on calls that involved women and children. Alice saw a need for women police officers. She started attending City Council meetings to lobby for the city to hire women as police officers. She made it clear they needed to hire young women to train as police officers. Alice was involved in PTA and Camp Fire as her daughters were in school. She also became involved with Soroptimist International, American Business Womens Association and Toastmistresses. She was instrumental in forming Yakima Valley Credit Union and serving on the board for 6 years. She loved to decorate and plan parties for organizations she belonged to and for YPD parties. She was preceded in death by her sister/brother-in-law Margaret and Carl Christofferson, brother John D. Borys, sister Mary Helen Rose, stepdaughter Bernadine Shockley, and granddaughter Michele Johnson. Alice is survived by daughters Geraldine (Gary) Young of Everett, Wa., Carol M. (Harold L.) Hutchinson, Sr. of Yakima, and Stepson Marvin (Helen) Bachison of Everett, Wa.; as well as grandchildren Shawna (Tim) Miller of Camano Island, Wa., Michaelene (Michael) Valdez, H. Lee Hutchinson, Jr., Jonathan (Blažena) Hutchinson, Donna Davis, all of Yakima, Michael (Tony) Bachison of Seattle, Wa., Kirk Bachison of Woodenville, Wa., Star (Raymond) Hammer of Arlington, Wa., Gail (Thane) Bennett of Olympia, Wa., Sonja (Jeff) Lindsay of Bellingham, Wa., Mark Johnson of Maryland, Mike Johnson of Whittier, Ca., Matt Johnson of Maryland, and Ken (Cathy) Shockley of Phoenix, Az. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Mitchell (Jenna), Jennifer, Gavin, Dante, Maddox, Alyssa, Markus, Isabella, Isaiah, Vanessa, Gage, Mya, Cade, Adam, Nicole, Ryan (Marcy), Brooklyn (David), Ross (Kim), Dakota, and Danielle; as well as great-great-grandchildren Hadley Hammer, Jaxson Hammer, Elsie Rae Kuhns, and Colton Bachison; nieces Barbara K. Fleming, Patti Anne Alaniz (Joe Breakfield) of San Pedro, Ca., Diane (Fritz) Raines of Sparta, Mo., Mary Demmer (Leonard) of Chapel Hill, N. Carolina; and nephew Charles (Ruth) Clegg of Willingboro, New Jersey. A Celebration of Life will be held , 28, 2015. A funeral procession will leave from Keith & Keith, 902 West Yakima Ave., at 9:00 am, to Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Graveside services and inurnment will be held at 9:30 am, followed by a Memorial Service starting at 11:00 am at Rainier Memorial next to the cemetery, followed by a potluck reception at the .
