Obituary: Boyd Clifton Rist is safely home with his Lord and Savior. He was born in Viborg, South Dakota to parents Clifford Frederick Rist and Mildred Oakland Rist on 7, 1946. He entered into eternal life on 14, 2014 at the age of 68. Dr. Rist received his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from the University of South Dakota in 1968. He earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1970 and his Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Virginia in 1985. Boyd was the loving husband of Norma Jean Kromminga Rist whom he married in ville, South Dakota on 10, 1968. Boyd completed his Master of Arts degree, the couple moved to Brainerd, Minnesota where he became a faculty member at Brainerd Junior . In 1973, they moved to Lynchburg, Virginia to begin teaching at Liberty University, then Lynchburg Baptist . Boyd became a member of the faculty in the Department of History, and Norma Jean joined the faculty in the Department of English. Boyds teaching career increasingly focused on political and constitutional history from the Revolutionary Era to the eve of the Civil War. Dr. Rist began his administrative career in collegiate education as Chair of the Division of Social Sciences. Over time, he moved into higher levels of administration, serving as Dean of the of Arts and Sciences, Dean of the Faculty, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and Provost. For many years, Dr. Rist served as the Chairman of the Accreditation Commission for the Transnational Association of Christian s and Schools (TRACS). In 2010, he received the Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his commitment to and generous support of the Liberty Debate Team. At the conclusion of the 2012-2013 academic year, Dr. Rist retired from full-time academic life at Liberty University. He received the Chancellors Award for forty years of service and was honored with the titles of Distinguished Professor of History and Provost Emeritus. Boyd was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and its Faith to Faith School class. He was also a member of the weekly Bible Study group at Peakland Baptist Church. His other memberships included Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Sigma Alpha, the SPHEX Club and the Lynchburg Bird Club. He founded the Liberty University chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. In 1982, Boyd and Norma Jean were blessed with the arrival of Emily Ruth Kromminga Rist, their daughter, who has been the source of great joy to her parents. Boyd deeply loved and cared for his family. He so enjoyed listening to Emily play her violin and piano, whether it be at a performance or while she practiced; he always managed to make time to attend her musical events. Dr. Rist served many organizations and received numerous awards, but his family and friends will remember him for much more. He loved his Savior and church, his career in higher education, and his many friends and colleagues. Boyd was a man who defined Christian service and integrity. He will be missed by all who knew him. Dr. Rist was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Mildred Rist and Norma Jeans parents, Dr. Myron and Audrey Kromminga. Among those who survive and gratefully shared his life are his wife of 46 years, Norma Jean of Lynchburg; his daughter Emily Rist Glover and her husband, David; his sister-in-law, Ruth Kromminga Irvin, her husband, Richard, and their daughter Margo Claire. The family wishes to express its thanks to Dr. John Halpin, Connie Miller, RN, and the entire team at the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer . We are so very grateful for the many prayers and acts of kindness offered for Boyd and his family. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider Liberty University for the Jerry Falwell Library; Thomas Road Baptist Church; or the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra. A funeral service will be conducted, 1:00 p.m., , 19, 2014, at Thomas Road Baptist Church - Pate Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Falwell and Dr. Cecil Kramer officiating. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 12-1 p.m., , 19, 2014, at Thomas Road Baptist Church - Pate Chapel. |
