Obituary: James Albert Belcher passed away on 17 at the age of 79. Known as Jim to his friends, he was born in Detroit MI to the late Henry and Theodora Belcher where his father assembled cars for Chevrolet. The Belcher family, originally from Virginia, relocated back to Henry in 1946. Jim graduated from Basset High and was very active in Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout award. He attended VPI, but found that being a cadet was not his calling, so he followed a young lady he had a crush on to National Business . Not only did he earn a degree from NBC, he won the heart of the girl he chased there and married Martha Sue Holcomb in 1960. started their life together in Martinsville, Jim working for Gravely Furniture. Jims career led them to Lynchburg where he worked for Imperial Reading. By the time Jim & Susie made their way to Lynchburg, they were busy with 3 boys and a daughter. Jim and Susie made sure their children saw a lot of Virginia, taking them on many camping trips and adventures around Virginia and an annual trip to Myrtle Beach. Jim was not one to sit on the beach and watch people walk by, so he crafted a volleyball set and would invite any and every one to stop and play a game. Jims career took him and his family to Statesville NC where he worked for Grenadier Knitwear, then to Southern Pines where he worked for Brooks and Perkins, and then back to Martinsville where Jim finished his career as controller with Dutailier VA, Inc. Jim loved playing golf at Forest Park, where he would give his grandchildren rides on his golf car. On his retirement, Jim was given a kayak by his children so he could start a new adventure of exploring the rivers. Jim was a member and a deacon at Broad Street Christian Church, serving as Financial Secretary for many years. Jim is survived by his wife Susie, whom he had to privilege of being married to for 57 years. He is also survived by his son Rick Belcher, wife Dana, grandchildren Carolyn, Wallis, and Stuart of Huntersville NC, son Chris Belcher of Chapel Hill NC, son Mark Belcher, wife Melissa, grandchildren Mason and Grace of Charlotte, NC, and a daughter Ginny Devine, husband Trevor, grandchildren Jack and Zoe of Statesville NC. Jim was preceded in death by his sister Kay Harley. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America or Broad Street Christian Church, 106 Broad St., Martinsville, VA 24112, both an important part of Jims life. The Belcher family would like to thank Mary Carter and Donna Pilson for their passionate care they gave Jim over the years, the Martinsville EMS for helping Jim get up when he fell, and the Comcast Cable for all their help getting Jims TV to work. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Broad Street Christian Church on 26 at 2:00pm, and a reception will be held afterwards in the fellowship hall. |
