Obituary: Reflecting on the life of my father, it seemed difficult to succinctly capture the essence of the man whose roles included father, grandfather, father-in-law, friend, confidant, mentor, protector, benefactor, motivator, Air Force Officer, teacher and businessman. However, I soon began to realize that this wasn a complicated endeavor. Family meant everything to him. He was dedicated to his family and spent his life loving and caring for us. And that was what truly defined him. He had other interests, particularly his business, but he was most passionate about his family. He took great pride in all of us: my three sisters, our spouses and his nine grandchildren. Along with our Mother, his wife and partner of 52 years, he made sure that, while we were growing up, my sisters and I had everything we really needed. He generously supported and promoted our development, ensuring that we each received excellent educations, having every opportunity to pursue our dreams. That vision extended to his grandchildren as well.

What made our fathers accomplishments even more remarkable was that he was a self made man. In the midst of the Depression, at the age of 6, his family was irrevocably torn apart when his mother died giving birth to his youngest sister. Unable to find work locally, his father was forced to board out the youngest children and, as a result, my father grew up in a string of foster homes. Despite limited guidance and support, his tenacious spirit and strong desire to succeed helped him make it through high school. He enrolled himself in Northeastern University in Boston, working throughout the school year to pay his room and board. In the summers he would save enough to pay his tuition by working in the shipyard, and later as a bellhop and night clerk on Cape Cod. It was in his last summer working on Cape Cod that he met our mother, and they married several years later in 1952. By that time my father had enlisted in the Air Force and, because he indicated that one of his interests was taking pictures, he was assigned to be a camera repairman. My father may have known his way around an adding machine, but he was not mechanically inclined and knew his path lie elsewhere. He applied for Officers Candidate School but was denied several times. However, his dogged determination finally won him a spot and he earned his officers commission. Serving his country over the course of the next 22 years, through multiple duty stations in the U.S and around the world, including a tour in Vietnam, the family grew and we ended up here at Langley where my father retired with the rank of Major in 1973. Never one to rest on his laurels, he earned his teaching certificate and proceeded to teach math at Jefferson Davis Jr. High School for the next 16 years. Upon his second retirement, he started working full time on his bookkeeping and tax service business that he had been operating on nights and weekends the previous 20 years. He loved running his own business and enjoyed going to work every day. Most of his clients were repeat customers and many had been with him from the beginning.

A great void was created with our fathers passing, but the fond memories we have of him will sustain us. For me, I will miss his guidance and support, our nightly conversations, his never ending list of projects, the dry jokes and our mutual love of junk food. But most of all, I will just miss my father and my friend.

Even though he has moved on to a better place, he will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

~Eulogy given by Christopher A. Beausoleil on behalf of Caryn B. Kayton, Cheryl B. Matt and Carla A. B. Smith (brother and sisters - the 4 Cs).

Papa was everything I could ask for in a grandfather; loving, giving, funny, motivating and an awesome role model. He taught me countless lessons while growing up. One of which was teaching me how not to be afraid of a little work. When we visited on Thanksgiving he would have me rake and bag his leaves for 50 cents a bag. He encouraged me to buy my first home which I know will help me in my future. He may not be with us anymore, but his morals and lessons will be with me forever. Thank you Papa. ~ Christopher R. Kayton, Grandson, Age 25

Papa was an amazing and enjoyable personality. No matter what he was going through, he never seemed to lose his sense of humor. Speaking with the clients of his that have come in to the office this year, they all had stories about a name that he called them, or a way that he used to joke with them. With his very frank and abrupt nature, a person could take his tone and words the wrong way. He always seemed to mean everything the best possible way :) Working with him and getting to know him so much better during his last bit of time with us was nothing short of an incredible blessing. I was very lucky to have been able to spend a little one on one time with someone so driven and charismatic. That being said, I wish he were still here to hear all of my "too many questions" and tell me about all the things that "I shouldn be worried about" The man has changed so many peoples lives during his stay here on earth that he has created an everlasting legacy. Personally, my kids and grandkids will hear stories about the man until I get a chance to meet him again. I love you Papa and miss you a great deal!!! ~ Geoffrey S. Kayton, Grandson, Age 22

Some of my favorite memories with papa are playing gin whenever he would continued...
