Obituary: Karen Hunt Buchanan, 81, passed away , 25, 2015, at her home in Manti, Utah. Karen was born on 6, 1934, in Monroe, Utah, to Theron and Oranell Hunt. She graduated from South High School and attended college at the University of New Mexico and the University of Utah. On 7, 1977, she married Vernon G. Buchanan in the Salt Lake Temple, following the death of Verns first wife, Carolynn, in 1976. Karen brought her daughter, Jennifer, from a previous marriage, to join with Verns family of six, and they legally adopted her into the family shortly thereafter. Karens life was marked by her passions for learning, service, and people. When she and Vern married, she courageously stepped into a ready-made family and embraced her role as mother and grandmother to a rapidly growing clan. She was loved by her 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, and they always looked forward to her warm hugs and home-baked cookies. Karen and Vern moved to Manti from Salt Lake in 1990 after Verns retirement. Together they built and appointed their home on 300 South; they envisioned a "gathering place" for family and friends, and Karen was attentive to details that would create warmth and comfort for themselves and their visitors. Every year they grew a large garden in the backyard and shared the bounties of their garden with neighbors and family. She was a talented artist, writer, and storyteller. Karen spent much of the past 25 years in service to the community and people of Manti. She worked diligently alongside Vern for 8 years as they led the project to restore Mantis Old City Hall. Her artistic touch is evident in the fine details of the restoration and selection of artwork and fixtures. Karen also served as a reporter/staff writer and ombudswoman for the Sanpete Messenger-Enterprise for many years, covering local news and features of Manti and Sanpete . She might best be described as a "people person". She loved to interview people and write about their lives and interests, always finding ways to make their stories come alive. She made many new friends in the process, and developed a deep love for the people of her community. She was kind, compassionate, and perceptive of others feelings and needs, always ready to offer a word of encouragement or a plate of home-cooked food. Karen was active and dedicated to service in the LDS Church. Karen and Vern served a mission to the England Bristol Mission from 1988-1989. She held many church callings throughout her life, including Stake Young Womens President for the Valley View Stake, Choir Director, School Teacher, and Compassionate Service Leader. She and Vern served as temple workers in the Manti Temple two days a week for 8 years. When Vern was called to be the Stake Patriarch, Karen provided recording and transcribing services for hundreds of patriarchal blessings over many years, even during the past year, until her health began to decline. She loved learning and was an avid reader. Her bookshelves are lined with an array of classics, inspirational writings, childrens literature, and contemporary favorites. She was an active member of the Manti Ladies Literary Club and found joy in exchanging ideas and new titles with the other members, many who became her dear friends. Music was another one of Karens loves. She loved to sing and participated in her ward choir, and always appreciated and encouraged the musical talents of others. Karen is survived by her husband, Vern, and their family members: Julie Ross (Brent), Gayle Boyle (Richard), Karl Buchanan (Kate), Jan Christensen (Que), Merrilee Buchanan, Scott Buchanan (Celeste) and Jennifer Buchanan. Siblings include Douglas Hunt (Charlene), and Joan Varner. Preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Winone Leivo and Susie Winegar. Karen leaves behind dozens of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on , Dec. 2, 2015, in the Manti 6th Ward Chapel, 295 South Main Street, where friends may call on morning from 8:00 to 10:30. Visitors are kindly requested to refrain from using scented perfumes or lotions because of family members chemical sensitivities. Interment with a brief graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park , 3401 E. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City. The family would like to thank the hospice team from Inter-mountain care and the many friends, family members, neighbors, ward members, and care providers who cared for Karen at home during her final weeks and provided meals and support to Vern. We are all deeply grateful. |

Obituary: A MANS A MAN FOR A THAT Frederick Stewart Buchanan passed away with his loving wife and family by his side on 24, 2016 after a 24-year struggle with Parkinsons Disease. Fred was born in Stevenston, Scotland to an Ulster Scot father and a Scots mother, Frederick Buchanan and Elizabeth Reid. He lived on the Clyde Coast of Scotland and learned to love the rush of the waves on the rocks, the call of the curlews above the sand dunes and the song of the meadowlarks on Stevenston Moor. He left school at age 15 to apprentice at the Ardeer Explosives Factory. Among the organizations which shaped his life were the Boy Scouts and his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had the distinction of being the only LDS Priest on the West Coast of Scotland. At the age of 17 he immigrated with his parents to the United States for religious reasons. only 18 months in Utah, Fred returned to Scotland when he accepted an LDS call to the British Mission, serving as President of the Scottish District. his mission he served in the US Army as a Chaplains Assistant. Eventually, through the generosity of the GI Bill, he enrolled at the University of Utah where he received his BA and MS degrees in history and English. graduation he taught at Bountiful High School launching his life-long passion for teaching and learning. On 27, 1963, Fred married his sweetheart Rama Richards in the Salt Lake Temple. With Rama by his side, and with her undying support, Fred earned his PhD in History of Education at The Ohio State University. He was a professor of Education at the University of Toledo for three years, followed by a 26-year career at the University of Utah, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. He is published in two areas-history of education and Scottish-Mormon studies, and received awards for these writings from the Mormon History Association. Freds love of his homeland Scotland was deep. Rama always says she didn realize she married a country when she married Fred. He loved teaching and reciting the poetry of Robert Burns and was quick to offer a Scottish toast or blessing. He enjoyed singing Scottish songs and playing the bagpipes-most memorably when he would march around the neighborhood to ring in the New Year. He was a member in the Salt Lake Scots Pipe Band and served as co-founder and first President of the Utah Scottish Association. Fred and Rama created a beautiful life for themselves and their five sons. He was passionate about gardening, nature, cooking and reading. He instilled in his sons the characteristics that endeared him to so many: service, faith, compassion, healthy skepticism, love of all people, hard work and a passion for all things Scottish. He cultivated and was blessed by rich, lifelong friendships. Fred is survived by his dear wife Rama, who was by his side until his last breath, his Buchanan Clan of five wee sons and guid dochters: Richard (Jenny), California; Brian (Rachel), East Millcreek, Utah; Glenn (Renee) Oregon; Alan (Laura), San Jose, California; Scott (Alicia), Sandy, Utah, and 18 grandchildren.
