Obituary: Leo M. Bertagnole, Jr. passed away peacefully in the evening on , 25th, 2015, surrounded by candlelight and 40s era music, in Salt Lake City, Utah after battling melanoma skin cancer. He was 88. Leo was born on 19, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leo Monroe Bertagnole and Myrtle Irene Gerber Bertagnole. Leo and his extended family grew up in the Sugarhouse area where he attended Irving Jr. High, East High, South High (where he played on the Drum and Bugle Corp) and he attended his senior year at West High. Leo enjoyed music and also played the trumpet and tenor saxophone when he was a young man. He and his wife, Karen, had three children, Brenda, Monte and Kip and later divorced. Born the son of a sheep rancher, Leo and his brothers worked with their father on the familys extensive ranching operations in East Canyon and the surrounding area for many years. One day when they were herding sheep above City Creek Canyon, Leos father suggested to Leo that maybe ranching wasn for him and suggested that he go find a job in the city. Leo did just that and over the years opened a series of used car lots along Main Street (1200 Motors) and State Street (Bertagnole Motors, Kars and Trucks) in Salt Lake City. Later, he opened a marina in 1957 on the south end of East Canyon Reservoir on the familys property, with 12 little cabin sites that he moved from a small motel that was being closed on State Street in Salt Lake City, and rowboats purchased from Liberty Park. In 1966 when the present East Canyon Reservoir dam was built and the old marina site was left underwater, Leo built a new Marina on the north end of the reservoir that his sister Myrtle and her family operated for many years. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Leo and his brothers entered into various business ventures under Bertagnole Investment that resulted in East Canyon Resort in Morgan , The Kimball Condominiums in downtown Salt Lake, the Emigration Oaks development in Emigration Canyon, a chain of health clubs, as well as various other supporting businesses. Leo was always an entrepreneur and was always working on his next project or idea. Later in life, Leo slowed from his usual fast pace and enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors. Preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gene (Marcia) Bertagnole, and sisters Donna (Ernest) White and Myrtle (Glen) Jensen. Survived by his three children, Brenda, Monte and Kip Bertagnole as well as his brothers Harold (Barbara) and Jay (Karen) and many nieces and nephews. Leo was laid to rest at a private graveside service on 30th at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City attended by his children and those closest to him where pictures of Leo were exchanged and stories and memories of him were shared on a beautiful spring afternoon. |
