Obituary: Beth Whiting Baker, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by those she loved, in the early morning hours of 2, 2006 after fighting a brave battle with cancer. The oldest of four daughters, she was born in Mapleton, Utah, on 1, 1920, to Victor Whiting and Eliza Goodson Bradford Whiting. At age 6, her mother passed away from peritonitis, and she and her sisters spent much of their lives being raised and nurtured by relatives. Her father remarried Maud Bentley Whiting and had four more daughters. She learned to work hard at a young age thinning beats, herding sheep, and weeding her fathers farm. One of her favorite pastimes was telling stories to her sisters and friends as she went down the rows. She worked as a housekeeper and nanny for Richard P. Condie in Salt Lake after graduating high school and later for Gatenbys in Orem. She married George W. Norman and had two daughters. were later divorced. Beth supported her young family working as a clerk at Dixon Taylor Russell, (DTRs,) in Provo. While attending a dance, she met a handsome sailor, LeGrand J. Baker, who she later married on 21, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. LeGrand and Beth blended their families of his daughter and two sons with her two daughters, and made their home in Provo. Together, they had one more daughter. She worked on school lunch and later as a jail matron for the Utah Sheriffs Department. She worked there for 23 years and became the first Head Matron. The inmates admired Beth because of her kindness and compassion and many told her she was the mother they never had. She was active in civic affairs and walked many miles taking censuses and loved the opportunity of being an Election Judge. Beth served in many church callings including Relief Society President, MIA President, School Secretary, Visiting Teacher, and as a Primary Teacher for the Blazers, whom she loved. She served for 25 years as Relief Society President at Sunset View Rest in Provo, and maintained that calling even after moving to Orem. She held numerous other callings up until the time of her illness. Beth enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for many years. She was very talented and did beautiful embroidery and sewing. She loved spending time with her sisters, her Cousin Parties, and family reunions. Beth loved helping others and dedicated her entire life to service. It was difficult for her to be the one who needed to be helped during the last few years. She was beloved by all who knew her. Everyone felt close to her and special because of her unconditional love, and almost everyone called her Gram. Beth was preceded in death by her husband, LeGrand, her son, Walter LeGrand Baker, sisters, Floy Harmer and Lavina Averett, son-in-law, Jay E. Beal, and grandson, Benjamin L. Baker. Gram is survived by her children, Thomas Carl (Glenice) Baker of Cumberland, Maryland; Ruth (Del) Badham of Salt Lake; Kae Beal of Provo; Carol Fallon of Orem, and Brenda (Kyle) Powell of Orem; daughter-in-law, Eleanor Baker; as well as 26 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Jane Olsen of Spanish Fork; Eliza Gean Wilson of Payson; Gay (Newell) Law of Mapleton; Creta (Don) Danner of Vacaville, California; and Leah (Murray) Skinner of Orem. The family would like to thank all those who gave their time and love in her care for their patience and true charity on her behalf. Even those who worked for her became extended family not just care givers. Beth was truly an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered as the most perfect woman we have been blessed to know. She will be missed tremendously and loved eternally until we all meet together again for a wonderful reunion on he other side. We love you, Gram! Service will be held , 7, 2006 at 11:00 a.m.at Orem East Stake , on the corner of 800 East and 600 North, Orem. A viewing will be held , 6, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson , 646 East 800 North, Orem with an additional viewing preceding the funeral services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on .
