Obituary: John Wright Brown, Lt. Col. (ret) 5, 1918-May 9, 2017

An American Hero Passes

For 98 years, John Brown served his family, his country, and his God with grace, honor, patience, and generosity.

As a career military officer, he joined the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor and quickly signed up for the Army Air Corps to fly airplanes. 200 hours of thrill packed flying adventures, he was assigned to the 8th Air Force to fly B-24s from England. His Dday assignment was to bomb Germany in support of the landing forces. He survived 27 missions and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal x 3 for bravery in combat, plus numerous other service medals. a short stint as an instructor pilot, he was assigned to Air Sea Rescue in England flying rescue missions in the North Sea and English Channel. His Air Force career included 21 years, 45 moves, tours and visits to The Pentagon (Washington DC), England, Germany, Italy, Spain, North Africa, France, Guam, and Puerto Rico. retirement in 1964, he settled in Montgomery Al., where he owned car washes and laundromats, while honing his bass fishing and investing skills.

In 1994, he and his wife Sue, moved to the Air Force Village in San Antonio, where they enjoyed the company of other retired Air Force officers. He was active in his church, volunteered at Wilford Hall Hospital, and traveled extensively across America. John and Sue were married for 53 years until her death in 1996.

He remarried in 1997 to a former Corning, IA high school classmate, Madeline (Hughes) Alcorn. spent part of each year in San Antonio and in Walnut Grove, MN. , eventually settling in Albert Lea, MN. During the 17 years they were married, they enjoyed Madeline's large family that included her four children, the 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

his second wife's death, John returned to Texas in 2014 to be with his son and daughter in law in Kingwood, TX. He enjoyed the warmer Texas climate, the good food, Wings Over Texas, and the many friends and family that visited often.

John had a quiet demeanor that hid his generosity. He funded a scholarship program for his hometown high school students, gave memorials to his church, supported numerous causes such as the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, St. Jude's, various community programs and individuals.

He is survived by his son Barrett Lee Brown, daughter-in-law Mary C. Brown, grandson Nick Brown, granddaughter Kristen L. Horabin (Christopher) and great grandchildren, Campbell , Kinley and Connor .

His second family includes Madeline's children J. Steven Alcorn (Cynthia ); Patricia Alcorn; Mary Helen Alcorn (Bee Thienprasit); Anne Marie Spates (Scot); and their offspring, including 9 grand children/step-grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren/step-great grandchildren.

Following a memorial service in Kingwood, his final resting place will be in the National in San Antonio.

Donations or memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or St. Jude's Hospital.

Obituary: John Elmer Brown, 95, of Carrollton, Texas, died , 15, 2017.

Services will be at 3 pm at First Baptist Church Carrollton (2400 N Josey Ln.) with his grandson, Brooks Boyett, officiating. Graveside services at Dallas-Fort Worth National will occur on a later date. by Rhoton .

Mr. Brown was born 5, 1921, in Abernathy, Texas, to John Early and Blanch Brown. He grew up the youngest of six brothers and three sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. His closest childhood companion was his nephew, Earl Brown, who was nearest to him in age. John was known by friends and family as Brownie. His father died when he was 16 years old. Rather than finish high school, Brownie dropped out in order to help support his mother. He began delivering groceries for Furrs Grocery Stores, and displayed this strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family for the rest of his life.

Brownie was quickly promoted within the Furrs organization until being assigned to the Furrs food warehouse, where he met Cleta Cotton McLain, a secretary for Mr. Roy Furr. The couple was wed in of 1942, after which Brownie enlisted into the U.S. military. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. He spent most of this time stationed in New Zealand, where he was a member of the Military Police Corps.

the war, he returned to Lubbock, Texas, and his career at Furrs. He attained his G.E.D. and served the company for the next 27 years, eventually becoming warehouse manager. During the 1960s, he spent three years in California working in a family construction business, before returning to Texas in 1966. Brownie worked at Affiliated Foods in Amarillo and for Arrow Industries in Dallas, Texas, before retiring in 1986.

Brownie and Cotton joined First Baptist Church Carrollton in 1980, where he served as a deacon. A loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he spent his retirement years pursuing his favorite activities, which included gardening, yard work, golf, and ping-pong. He survived a rare form of laryngeal cancer in 1991, which left him without a larynx and required him to learn esophageal speech, an alternative speaking technique he mastered.

Brownie was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Cleta Cotton Brown; daughters Vicki Brown of Carrollton and JoDeane Boyett of Amarillo; plus many nieces and nephews, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His family expresses their deep appreciation to his wonderful caretakers at Autumn Leaves of Carrollton.

Born 26, 1944, in Bluefield, West Virginia to the late John Henry Brown, Sr and Virginia Mae (Dodson) Brown. He lived in New Hampshire, Virginia, Spain, Thailand, Louisiana, and Belgium, before settling in Texas. He proudly served his country as a Security Police Officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 until he retired in 1984. He continued to serve his country as a civil service employee at Goodfellow AFB, TX as a member of the 17th Civil Engineer Squadron, retiring in 2011.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Thoi (Bootnien) Brown of San Angelo, TX (Thailand), his daughters, Jackie Jackson (William ) of San Angelo, TX, Jenny Brown of Austin, TX and Regina Williams (Willie) of Arlington, TX, six granddaughters (Shenetra Brown, Jazmine Jackson, Micaela Jackson, Whitney Middleton, Nakayla Williams, and Tyah Williams), five grandsons (Timothy Walker, Jr, Braylon Gayle, Khamren Williams, Xarius Williams, and Xavier Williams), four great-granddaughters (Dejah Williams, Nariah Brown, Jailah Jackson, and Khaylee Williams), one great-grandson (Khaleb Williams), a sister, Regina Mitchell (Garry) of Durham, North Carolina, a sister-in-law, Dameta Brown Carter (Douglas), two nephews (Michael Mitchell and Robert Mitchell), sisters-in-law, brothers-in law, nieces, nephews of Thailand, and a host of cousins. Mr. Brown retired after 33 years from Paine Supply of Jackson as salesman. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Richland and served Deacon for many years. Mr. Brown was a member of Plain Lodge #622 and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and was a charter member of the Richland Exchange Club.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, Willis Mae Brown; Parents Winfield Scott Brown and Mary Alice Brown and his sister, Rose Nell Hilton.
He is survived by two sons, Keith Brown and his wife Heidi and David Brown and his wife Tracy. One sister, Sue Boggan and her husband Joe and a brother, Harold Brown and his wife Willie Bea; Two grandsons, Charley Brown and Timothy Brown and very special friends, Johnny and Lynn Pearson and family.
