Obituary: Annie Lorene Bronder, 85, passed away , May 10, 2010. She was born 9, 1924, in Cestohowa, Texas. A 65 year resident of San Antonio, Annie was involved in numerous civic and volunteer activities. In 1944, she began her catering career at the Olmos Club and became famous for the extraordinary functions she arranged. An adventurous traveler for a woman of her time, Annie visited Canada, pre-Castro Cuba, Mexico, and 11 countries in Europe. Her European tour began on the Queen Mary, with a return voyage on the Queen Elizabeth. Annie made friends with John Wayne, Frankie Avalon, and Richard Boone during the filming of the movie The Alamo. She rode to the San Antonio premier in Avalons limousine. Annie was a founding member of the North Shearer Hills Neighborhood Association formed in 1980 in response to a proposed street connection that would have most certainly changed the neighborhood for the worse. She held various positions on the Neighborhood board and was very active throughout the last 30 years. Annie was close personal friends with many City Council members, judges, other elected officials and was on a first name basis with at least a few Mayors. She also volunteered at the San Pedro Church of Christ senior lunch program during the 1990s. For Annie, grassroots had two special meanings. Annies yard was her pride and joy. Strangers often stopped to admire her flowers and make a new friend. She had one of the prettiest informal gardens in the area. Folks from throughout north central San Antonio would make the jaunt a few blocks off San Pedro to enjoy Annies flowers in bloom. She was a friend to her neighbors and a neighbor to all who passed by her little corner. Annie also was well known for the grassroots politics at which she excelled at the federal, state and local levels. She attended Republican state and national conventions and was active in the Bexar Republican Womens Club since 1963. She helped launch the political careers of numerous local and state candidates. She also was a key volunteer for Presidential campaigns – especially President George H. W. Bush; gubernatorial campaigns – helping elect Bill Clements the first Republican Governor in Texas in a century; and in Republican congressional, legislative and judicial races in Bexar . Annie became involved in Republican politics before Republicans were winning elections in Texas. And it was more than a coincidence that she stayed involved until Republicans were the majority party in our state, said former Bexar Judge Cyndi Taylor Krier who credits Bronders teaching her the art of blockwalking as a key to winning her first election to the Texas Senate. With Annie, it was like knocking on a new friends door each step of the way. Annie was a proud, active citizen and always exercised her right to vote, regardless of who or what issue was on the ballot. As a matter of fact Annie was the first voter to vote, bright and early on Sat. May 8th for a local school board election. Annie loved San Antonio, her friends, her neighbors, and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Felix Joseph Bronder and Rosie Jendrusch Bronder; brother Edmond Bronder; sister Ella Aime; and her beloved friend of 50 years, Bob Floyd. Survivors include sister Magdalen House; nieces Deborah Aime Harris and Judy House; nephews Wayne House and Bob House; great-nieces and great-nephews. Annie will lie in state from 10:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. on , May 12th. The family will visit with friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough. SERVICE THURSDAY MAY 13, 2010 11:00 A.M. PORTER LORING CHAPEL INTERMENT TO FOLLOW 2:00 P.M. ST. MATTHEWS CEMETERY JOURDANTON, TEXAS Rev. Rollin Polk officiating. Memorials may be made to the SAMMs Shelter, 910 W. Commerce St., San Antonio, TX 78207 or the charity of your choice. |
