Obituary: Sally McCarthy Bolster, who spent most of her life in Norwalk, Connecticut, died in San Antonio, Texas on 16, 2013. She was 84. Born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, and educated at Simmons in Boston, MA, Sally was initially intrigued with the world of fashion. She modeled as a young woman at G. Fox and , in Hartford, and worked as a buyer for Bloomingdales. Sally then moved to Norwalk with her husband, Bill, in 1956. A dedicated community servant, activist, and elected official, Sally was an indefatigable woman who left her mark by helping other people. Following service on the Norwalk School Building Committee, during which she helped build 11 public schools, Sally was elected to the Norwalk City Council in 1967. She served for 8 years, including a term as President of the City Council, after which the state Republican Party nominated her to run for Secretary of State in Connecticut. She then served for twelve years as the Assistant for Community Affairs for Connecticut Congressman Stewart B. McKinney, and was especially proud of her work to create low-income public housing and to establish the McKinney National Wildlife Refuge in Long Island Sound. Later Sally campaigned successfully for a seat in the Connecticut General Assembly, where she served several terms. Service as an elected official was only part of a much richer career. An activists activist, Sally served on the boards of directors of many institutions. She was the first woman director of a savings and loan association in Connecticut, but she was more proud of her work on behalf of the Human Services Council of Mid-Fairfield ; the Norwalk Emergency Shelter; the Mutual Housing Association of Southwest Connecticut; the Community Economic Development Corporation of Norwalk; the Mid-Fairfield Substance Abuse Coalition; and the Norwalk Senior , among others. She understood housing law, project management, and fund-raising, and she was especially adept at working with multiple constituencies and various stakeholders. Among her signature projects were oversight of the construction of a 44-room unit to accommodate the working poor. She was also instrumental in bringing together the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the League of Women Voters to promote the idea of a community college in Norwalk, opening the possibilities of higher education to many people. Sally was smart, fair, and principled, and she took seriously the injunction of her late father to make the world a better place. In light of her extensive community service, Sally was honored to carry the Olympic torch as it crossed our nation in 1996. When she and her husband decided to retire to San Antonio, friends in Connecticut quipped that she would soon be organizing Bexar . In San Antonio Sally continued her affiliation with the AAUW and the League of Women Voters, and served on the Northeast Independent School Districts Citizens Bond Advisory Committee. She also began to teach adult education classes at ALIR (Adult Learning in Retirement), which she considered the icing on the cake of her community service. A Republican for decades (including having been a delegate to nominate Ronald Reagan), Sally became a Democrat in Texas and headed the Northeast Bexar Democrats. Throughout her long and distinguished career Sally was extraordinarily proud of her family. As a young mother involved in politics she always left a regular, home-cooked meal for her husband and sons, and she baked wonderful pies and Swedish Christmas cookies year-round. She and her husband had several boats in which they cruised on the coast of New England. also traveled extensively, including a trip to the village in Sweden from which her mother had emigrated. Sally encouraged her sons to pursue their dreams, which they did. She and her husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary three weeks before she passed, in the presence of their sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Sally was always a fighter. A cancer survivor from 40 years ago, she faced every challenge with determination and dignity. Sally was the daughter of the late Charles J. McCarthy and Ella Olson McCarthy. She was predeceased by her brother, Charles J. McCarthy, Jr. Sally is survived by her husband Bill, her sons Jeffrey, of Portsmouth, NH; David, of San Antonio, TX; and Peter, of Baltimore, MD; her daughters-in-law Molly, Mary Jo, and Julie; and her grandchildren, Ellie, Carl, Kenny, Liam, and Maisie. MEMORIAL SERVICE MONDAY, AUGUST 19 6:00 PM PORTER LORING NORTH CHAPEL In lieu of flowers, contributions to the memory of Sally M. Bolster may be sent to the League of Women Voters. |

Obituary: Rosalie Richter Bolner, loving wife, devoted mom and grandmother, civic leader, cook extraordinaire and accomplished musician died at her home on 18, after an eight year battle with Alzheimers. Rosalie was born in San Antonio 6, 1929 to Otto and Aleen Richter. She was a direct descendant of the Canary Island families of Curbelo, de Armas, Padron and Travleso. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Clifton J. Bolner. She was the oldest of 6 children; 4 of her siblings survive her: Barbara & Anton Hajek, Joan & Pat Kennedy, Otto Jr. & Patty Richter, and Tommy & Joy Richter. Her sister Christina Richter Engels died earlier this year. She is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Peggy and Harvey Penshorn. Rosalie and Clifton were married in San Antonio at St. Marys Church downtown on 26, 1949. The couple has 7 children and 19 grandchildren, who knew her as Nana: Tim & Judy Bolner Greg, Matt & Lauren, Mike & Mary Pat Bolner Jeff & Kathy, Emily, Elizabeth, Debbie Bolner Prost Stephanie, Cindy & David Meeh of Houston Josh & Elizabeth, Daniel, Jonathan, Beverly Bolner Christopher, Caroline, Clifton Harness, Chris & Magdalena Bolner Brandon, Christopher, Andrew, Dustin and Mary Bolner of Key West, Florida. For 25 years, as her children attended St. Pauls, St. Martins Hall, St. Anthonys, Central Catholic, Ursuline Academy and Incarnate Word High School, Rosalie was active in the school PTAs & Mothers Clubs. She continued her service to local Catholic Schools all her life serving on numerous boards and development committees. Great food was a main focus for Rosalie. Rosalie met the love of her life, Clifton Bolner, as elementary school students at St. Gerards Catholic School, where their moms, who were both excellent cooks volunteered in the school cafeteria. Throughout her life she sentimentally recalled the aroma of freshly baked Richters Butter Krust bread brought home daily from the family bakery by her father. She co-founded Bolners Fiesta Spices with her husband, and both the business and her husband added quite the spice to her life. She avidly developed unique seasoning recipes for the family business. Year after year she tirelessly organized the food at church and school festivals, and various charity fund raisers. With her 7 children came large and wonderful family dinners along with many hungry visitors for slumber parties and team dinners. Rosalie ensured all were lovingly welcomed and that everyone had all the helpings they wanted of her lasagna, pot roast, pinto beans, or signature chili. She encouraged all her children to cook....a charge that they have all happily embraced. Rosalie grew up exposed to classical music, as her mother played the piano and her father the violin. She began studying keyboards as a child. Rosalies favorite music story dates from 1945 when she was a neophyte organ student attending St. Marys High School in downtown SA. One afternoon, Principal Sister Teracita, excitedly called her out of class, told her to run to the choir loft in the big church, to play a Hymn of Thanksgiving and to pull out all the stops play very loudly. Rosalie was shocked by this directive from the very proper Sister, but ran to the choir loft and played Holy God We Praise Thy Name over and over as Pastor Father John Quinlivain pealed the bells and St. Marys Church filled to overflowing as the San Antonio community rushed in to thank God that World War II was over. She continued her music studies in college, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Music from Our Lady of The Lake University. OLLU recently awarded Rosalie an Honorary Doctorate in Music celebrating her 30 years of service on the Board of Trustees and as a Major Contributor to her beloved Alma Mater. Rosalie taught and performed music for 65 years including playing the organ at thousands of Masses and Weddings in local churches and especially enjoyed performing piano concertos as part of the Music Duo Piano Ensemble Group. She served as President of the Music Club, was on the Board of the Opera Guild, sang in the Mastersingers for 25 years, served as an officer of the San Antonio Symphony League and was the parish organist at St. Pauls Catholic Church and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for 45 years. Rosalies literary, historical preservation, philanthropic, and civic interests led to active participation in organizations such as The San Antonio Conservation Society, The Southwest Foundation Forum, Los Compadres, The Cancer Council in support of Cancer Therapy and Research , Sultanas de Bexar, Gibbons Literary Club, and Friends of the Ronald McDonald House. Rosalie served as a Trustee on the Board of Santa Rosa Childrens Hospital and is past President of St. Monicas Guild. She was a member of The St. Patricks Holy Family Guild for 50 years. The Oblate Priests of Mary Immaculate were an integral part of Rosalies life and she was an Honorary Lifetime member of the Oblate Associates. Travel was a lifetime avocation for Rosalie. She attended the American Spice Trade Association Annual Conventions to visit with members of the World Spice Trade for over 30 years, enjoyed many family vacations in Mexico and the Colorado mountains, made numerous trips to visit her college aged children at Texas A&M, Texas Tech, St. Edwards University and the University of Notre Dame, and cruised to worldwide ports of call with her husband. The Richter Family lived in Corpus Christi during Rosalies preteen years developing a deep love for the Texas Coast, a love of which she instilled in her children. She spent many relaxing weekends smelling the salt air at Port Aransas with family and friends and enjoyed tending her garden in the Texas Hill Country. The family would like to especially thank Terry, Gloria, Vicky, Elida, Anita, Cynthia, Jim, Maria T, Sisters , Nix care, Dr. Robert Schnitzer and his office staff, and Christus Hospice for their loving and respectful service and high level of quality care they provided to Rosalie continued... |
