Obituary: WYLLYS KING "Bill" BLISS, Jr., a resident of Houston for more than forty years, born 18, 1932, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on , 17, 2009, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Bill was the youngest son of Wyllys and Estelle Bliss. He is survived by his two sons, William Carter Bliss II, and his wife Kathyleen, Michael King Bliss, and his wife Crystal, and grandchildren Rebecca, Alex, and Matthew, all of Houston, his brothers Robert A. Bliss and wife Jane, and Malcolm A. Bliss, and wife Lois, all of St. Louis, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill attended Clayton High School and in 1953 graduated from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Business Administration. Bill had a long and distinguished military career. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve while attending college, and two weeks after graduation, departed for two years active duty with the Navy. Upon his release from active duty in , 1955, as a Yeoman Second Class, he applied for and received a direct appointment as an Ensign. He remained active in the Naval Reserve until his retirement as Lieutenant Commander on 1, 1976. Bill spent the bulk of his professional career as a sales executive in the packaging industry, selling various types of packaging products to retail and wholesale product manufacturers. Corporate transfers moved him from St. Louis, to New Orleans, Houston, Atlanta, and back to Houston. retirement, Bill formed his own company, Bliss and Associates, of which he was the president. He received recognition as the outstanding supplier representing his employers, and was a member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP). Bill was a born leader. When his sons entered the Boy Scouts, he quickly rose to the positions of Assistant Scout Master and Troop Committee Chairman, both of which he held for many years, first at Troop 1548 in Houston, then later at Troop 1776 in Atlanta. Bill was a devoted and very active member of St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic church. In addition being a lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and acolyte, he served as Chairman of the Parish Council for more than ten years. He was an avid woodworker, and spent numerous hours in the carpentry shop building furniture and working on special projects for his church. Of all his accomplishments, Bill is the most proud of those at the University of Houston - Hilton . Twenty-six years ago when his daughter became the victim of a murder-suicide, Bill channeled his grief into the development of a scholarship in her memory. In the years since then, Bill worked tirelessly to support the expansion of the scholarship, and through it, the college. Today, the Becky Bliss Memorial Scholarship is the second largest endowed scholarship offered by the Hilton . Bill also holds the record for the largest number of Gourmet Nights consecutively attended -- twenty-six -- many of them wearing his trademark red plaid tuxedo. Bill loved meeting and mentoring to the scholarship recipients and received numerous honors and awards. In 1993 he became an honorary alumnus and in 2005 he was awarded Distinguished Honorary Alumni Status. In 2008, he was honored again when he received his own endowed scholarship, the Bill Bliss Scholarship. He was honored as a "Keeper of the Flame" in the 35th anniversary painting commissioned by the college to honor those who had a significant impact on the growth of the Hilton , and was a member of the UH Presidents Club and the 1927 Society. Bill leaves behind innumerable friends and acquaintances. He believed there were no strangers in life, but rather only people he hadn met, whose stories he had not yet heard. He excelled at finding common friends and was thrilled whenever he could reunite those who had been separated by time or distance. He frequently traveled abroad, and made several trips to his favorite destination, the Vatican. In 2001, he and his nephew enjoyed a private mass with Pope John Paul II in his private chapel at which he received the treasured gift of a rosary from the Holy Father. Bill was a relentless supporter and caregiver to many, always responding when called upon for help. He will be remembered for his dedication, honesty, humor, and generous nature.
