Obituary: Mary Frances Buchanan Black, age 78, passed away peacefully with her devoted grandson, Spencer at her side on the morning of , 19, 2012. Mary was born on 10, 1934 in DeWitt, Arkansas. She was the only girl in a family of six children and was adored by her brothers. She graduated from DeWitt High School where she played on the girls basketball team. Mary spent much of her adult life traveling the country with her husband, who served in the Army. She enjoyed the opportunity to live in different places around the country and the chance to meet new friends at each location. Eventually, she settled in San Antonio, TX and remained close to her three children. She carried a quiet strength throughout her life and was a caring mother, always dedicated to her family. Some of her favorite pastimes included cooking and celebrating the holidays with family and friends. She also enjoyed spending time fishing on the Texas coast. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert L. Black; loving companion, Donald Schilo and brothers, Archie and Bobby Lynn Buchanan. She is survived by her children, Debbie Kohler and Ken, Carol Spring, Jerry Black and wife, Patricia; brothers, James and wife, Dixie of Cabot, Arkansas, Spencer and wife, Ethel of DeWitt, Arkansas, Billy and wife, Jeanette of Salem, OR; grandchildren (to whom she was always Nana) Sarah, Zane, Jacob, Jason, Jerred, Spencer, Shawna, Danny, and Ben. Marys family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the care and compassion shown by the staff of Christus VNA Hospice; especially Andrea, Carolyn, Nancy, Stephanie, and Dr. Blanchett. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Cahalan and husband Tim of Austin, Texas; Joyce Bowen and husband Mark of Arvada, Colorado; Julie Harlan and husband John of Cedar Park,Texas; seven grandchildren, Kathryn and Jennifer Cahalan; Jared, Nicole, Kyle and Troy Bowen; Garrett Harlan; her brother, Charles E. Graham of Orange, Texas; sister, Shirley Hudson and husband Curtis of Crosby, Texas; several nieces and nephews as well as her ex-husband, John Black of Fort Worth, Texas; loving friend, Laurence Maloney of Fort Worth, Texas; and loving caregiver, Z. Obituary: Col. Mary L. Black Blackie Army Nurse Corps, Retired, passed away suddenly on 4, 2007 at the age of 86. Col. Black was born on 16, 2921 in Mansfield, Ohio, the daughter of William and Grace Gates Black. She completed her Nurses training at Mansfield GeneralÂs Hospital in Ohio and was recognized as one of its most outstanding graduates. Upon graduation Blackie entered the Army Nurse Corps. With the winding down of the military after World War II, she served in several positions in the civilian workforce in many areas of the US. Upon being recalled during the Korean Conflict she then completed her years in the Army until retirement in 1975. Col. Black, a Nurse Anesthetist, received her BS from San Francisco State and a Masters Degree from Incarnate Word . She is a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam era. She served as a nurse anesthetist, at various military hospitals throughout the world to include Tripler Army Medical in Hawaii, Germany, Korea, San Francisco CA, El Paso TX and Walter Reed, Washington D.C. She had been an Instructor in the Nurse Anesthetist Program at BAMC. She culminated her career as Director of Nurse Anesthetist at BAMC until she retired in 1975. In 1970, Col. Black distinguished her service earning a SoldierÂs Medal for saving the life of a young Marine from nearly drowning in the waters of Hanauma Bay, Hawaii. Where he was trapped in an underwater ledge and lost consciousness. A SoldierÂs Medal is given to few soldiers and is only given to those who put their own lives in danger while saving others. As of 1970 only seven SoldierÂs Medals had been awarded to members of the Army Nurse Corps since the medal was authorized by Congress in 1926. Her other awards include World War II Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two OLC, Meritorious Service Medal with OCL, AOM Germany, ACM, and the Legion of Merit. An avid golfer from childhood to recently, she was a longtime member of FSH WomenÂs Golf Association and also active in ÂRuptured Ducks National Women Veterans Association. She began golfing as a young child being taught by her father. She had a never ending fondness of animals having shared her life love with both dogs and cats. She was an avid bridge player and sports enthusiast. During retirement she took care of senior friends providing transportation, administration and insuring health care was provided to them. Col. Black was a member of the Army Nurse Corps Association and the American Legion Post 612 Windcrest. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Manz of Leesburg, FL; and in Ohio by a nephew, William Manz and wife, Ana; a foster niece, Lu Kinstle and husband, Karl; great nephew and nieces; and great great nieces and nephews. Blackie was a daughter, sister, aunt, nurse, soldier, golfer, sports fan, animal lover, bridge player and friend. She will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Incarnate Word University Section and/or The AMEDD Museum Foundation, Inc. at Fort Sam Houston. |
