Obituary: Gloria Doe Doe Pearl Hill Black was an energetic, adventurous, inquisitive, ambitious little girl. Austin, Texas was her playground. She was only two weeks old when she arrived in Austin and was placed in the caring arms of her aunt, Pearl Etta Hill. Gloria embraced everything about this city. She attended Austin Schools, graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1966. At Austin High, Gloria was active in many school clubs and activities. The one she is most proud of is being the first African American member of the Tennis Team. Gloria endured many incidents of racial discrimination, but was determined to not let it make her quit! She credits her coach, Ms. Herndon, for guidance and protection through those difficult times. Gloria was also on the Yearbook Staff and participated in the Drama and Journalism Club. This led to another passion of hers – writing - and she completed an internship with The New York Times where she was assigned to the United Nations Ebenezer Baptist Church was her family church. John Hill was one of Ebenezers founding members. Gloria was on Ebenezers Cradle Roll, joining the church at the age of twelve. marrying Bill Black, they were blessed to become parents of five children, whom they cherished and adored. She was mother to at least sixteen other children, whom she nurtured and dearly loved. Gloria was a licensed Master Social Worker, Advanced Practitioner, and Licensed Counselor with a Masters Degree in Education. She was a classroom teacher for five years and worked ten years with Texas Department of Mental -Mental Retardation. In 1995, she received her Ed.D. She was a faculty member and administrator at Huston-Tillotson (University) and faculty member at The University of Texas at Austin. She was a graduate of Leadership Austin. Gloria retired from the Texas Education Agency, Services to Children, Youth, and Families Units. During her college years, Gloria worked here in Austin assisting (then State Senator) Barbara Jordan with clerical duties and data entry. She also played a vital role in Ms. Jordans successful campaign for the United States Congress. During her professional career, Gloria was chairperson for the 25th Anniversary of the Presidents Commission on the Status of Women and was privileged to serve on that Commission during the administrations of four United States Presidents, thoroughly enjoying the acquaintances of the Bushes, the Clintons and the Obamas. One of the most memorable experiences she was afforded while working on the Commission was the opportunity to meet the Queen of England and Prince Charles. Gloria served as advisor to the 101st through 105th Congressional Caucus for Childrens Issues, eight years on the Board for the National Commission for Women, and six years on the Board for Children and Family Services. Gloria was a founding member and vice-president of the School Social Work Association of America and Texas School Social Work Association and President of the Southern School Social Work Council. She received awards from USA Today for her AIDS Awareness for Women campaign and from Texas Ms. for her contributions to women and children issues. She was Advisor for the Childrens Summit.
