Obituary: Jesse Stone Binford, Jr., 85, died at his home in Austin on 27, 2014. Jesse was a chemistry professor for 48 years, specializing in calorimetry, the science of measuring heat from chemical processes. With his wife, Lolita, who preceded him in death by seven weeks, he was an avid traveler and a community activist. He was also an enthusiastic bicyclist from the late 1950s until just months before his death. Jesse was born in Freeport on 1, 1928, and grew up primarily in Houston, where he graduated from Lamar High School and then earned a BA in chemistry from Rice Institute (now Rice University) in 1950. Among honors he received at Rice was election to the Phi Beta Kappa society. He went on to earn two graduate degrees in chemistry – an MA from Rice in 1952 and a PhD from the University of Utah in 1955. Jesse and Lolita married on 8, 1955, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved to Austin where he began teaching chemistry at the University of Texas. He subsequently taught at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and then at the University of South Florida, in Tampa. He taught at USF from 1961 to 2003, with leaves for research and teaching at the National University of Honduras, where he was also head of the chemistry department; at the University of Lund, Sweden; at the University of London and at Rice. At USF he implemented innovative teaching techniques, including performing chemical demonstrations, teaching in small sections, peer-teaching and the early use of personal computers. He won multiple awards for his teaching, published 20 professional articles and wrote a college textbook, Foundations of Chemistry. Jesse was active in representing his fellow faculty in university governance. He was elected four times as the President/Speaker of the USF Faculty Senate and once as Chair of the Faculty Senate Council of the entire Florida university system. One of his greatest pleasures was to be faculty advisor to the USF bicycle club for 32 years. The club was very active during these years, sponsoring hundreds of recreational rides around central Florida, hosting occasional bicycle races on campus and providing bicycle tools and workshop space on campus. Jesse was a visionary advocate for the use of bicycles as a serious mode of transportation. He commuted to work by bicycle, and lobbied for bike lanes and racks on and around campus. He served as chair of the bicycle advisory committee for Hillsborough government and was a charter member of a similar committee for the Florida Department of Transportation. Both groups were influential in funding the widening of roads and highways to add lanes reserved for bicycles. Jesse was a dedicated member of the First United Church of Tampa and the Congregational Church of Austin, serving for many years as a board trustee and in other roles. retiring from teaching in 2003, Jesse was awarded the position of Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at USF, and later returned with Lolita to live in Austin. Together in Austin, they actively supported numerous political campaigns, worked for social justice through their church and happily spent time with family. Jesse is survived by son Lincoln and his wife Nancy; son Jason and his wife Claire Barnes; grandchildren Emily, Noah, and Trevor; and sister Marialice Shaffer and her husband Joe Shaffer, all of Austin. A memorial service will be held , 12, at 2 pm at the Congregational Church of Austin. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Congregational Church of Austin, to a college or university of your choice or to the League of American Bicyclists. |

Obituary: On 8th 2016, Dana Everett Binford, passed from this world. Born 16, 1937 Dana was the oldest of three children born to Leota and Baker Binford. Dana was born in Charleston, WV. He graduated High School in in Bluefield, WV and attended a few semesters at the University of West Virginia. Having an adventuristic spirit, Dana postponed his college education and joined the Coast Guard. He was stationed in San Francisco and Alaska during his term in the guard. On his travels in the Guard, he developed his love for photography, a passion he kept up with all his life. his stint in the guard he moved to South Dakota where he met the young girl who would become his wife Gail McFarland. both moved to central Ohio where they started their family and had four children. He worked hard to support his family, often working two jobs and picking up spare weekend construction jobs. He took night classes and earned his Bachelors in Business Administration at Franklin University in Columbus, OH. In the early 80s, he and a coworker set out to start a highway construction company, Javelina Construction, Inc. set up shop in New Braunfels, Texas. Fulfilling a promise he made to his young bride that they would return to her home state of Texas. Javelina was in business for thirty years until it had to close its doors in the last recession. There isn a major highway in Texas that hasn been worked on at one part or another by the company he helped found. Dana was a voracious reader, loved history and travel. When they were young, Gail and Dana traveled with their children all over the United States. taught them about the history of every place they visited. When they were older, they loved traveling to Mexico. When Gail passed on in 2005, Dana continued to travel including a long trip to Italy, Spain and southern France. each adventure, he would return home with literally thousands of pictures to share and stories about the cultures or historical knowledge of the places he visited. He was just a week away from heading back to Barcelona before he died. Dana was a stranger to no one and a friend to all. He treated his friends like family and his family were also his friends. Never seeking to be the center of attention, people tended to center around him to listen to his stories or seek his advice. He never set out in his lifes journey to touch peoples hearts, but by how he lived his life, he did. He was strong, patient, and had a sharp wit. He kept his promises and was honest. He was a great brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. Dana Binford was a good man. He will be missed but never forgotten by those who knew him. Dana was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 43 years. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Allred and her husband Bill and his brother Douglas Binford and wife Randall. His son Jefferson Binford and wife Sonya, daughters Jana Saffell and husband Randy, Jenifer Binford Hanson, Juliette White and her husband Anthony. His grandchildren Morgan Haynes and husband Michael, Collin Cox, Hannah Cox, Ethan Hanson, Dana Hanson, Ian White, Mia White, Chrysten Saffell, Justin Saffell, Jeremy Saffell and Hannah Ferrelli. Three Great Grand Children Greyson Haynes, Henry Haynes, Robert Haynes and numerous nieces and nephews. Per our fathers wishes, no formal service or viewing will be held. Friends and family will gather together on 30 to celebrate his life. The family ask the you support the American Heart Association. A memorial fund has been set up in his name.
