Obituary: Brig. Gen. James Sykes Billups, Jr. U.S. Army Ret. of San Antonio, born on 21, 1918 in Columbus, Mississippi died at the age of 84 on , 21, 2002 at home. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Â- Class of 1939. He was one of a select few military officers appointed by General Dwight Eisenhower, then President of Columbia University, to complete the Masters Program in International Affairs. During his many years in the military he received the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal With Cluster, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-American-Middle Eastern Campaign 5 Bronze Stars, Croix de Guerre France, Croix de Guerre Luxembourg, WW II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Germany, National Defense Service Medal, Department of Defense Identification Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Office of the The Secretary of Defense Identification Badge and the Order of Ulchi Korea In 1991, he was honored in Chartres, France for having been instrumental in saving the Cathedral from destruction during WWII. Some of the different organizations that he was involved with was the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Metropolitan Club New York, The Argyle Club San Antonio Doubles New York Spouting Rock Newport, Rolling Rock Ligonier, PA, Club Giraud San Antonio, San Antonio Country Club San Antonio, Joshua Creek Club San Antonio, Confrerie Des Chevaliers du Tastevin San Antonio, and the Order of the Alamo San Antonio. Survivors include his wife, Frances; one son James S. III and wife, Nancy, of San Antonio; four daughters, LeAnn Billups, Austin, Liza Lewis and husband, Jack, III, of San Antonio; Francesca Mannix and husband, John , of San Antonio, Marcella Symington and husband, Fife, Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren, Fannie, Sallie and A.J. Lewis of San Antonio, Mariah and Alessandra Cotten, of Austin, Bailey and Audrey Billups of San Antonio, Marguerite, Felicia and John Luke Mannix, of San Antonio, Annabel Vesta Symington of Scottsdale AZ. The family wishes to acknowledge with deepest gratitude the generous loving care given by: Luis A. Obituary: BILLUPS Frances Heard Billups, born 18, 1928 went to be with the Lord on 20, 2011 at the age of 82. She was the only child of Cyrus L. and Marguerite Heard. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Brigadier General James S. Billups, Jr. Frances is survived by her five children, LeAnn Billups, Liza B. Lewis and her husband Jack, James S. Billups III and his wife Nancy, Francesca B. Mannix and her husband John, and Marcella B. Symington and her husband Fife. She is also survived by 13 beautiful grandchildren; Alessandra and Mariah Cotten; Fannie, Sallie, and A.J. Lewis; Bailey and Audrey Billups; Marguerite, Felicia and John Luke Mannix; and Annabel, Cyrus and Lelia Symington. Frances was a wonderful daughter, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend and will be missed by all. She graduated from Alamo Heights High School and SMU. She was a member of The Argyle, San Antonio Country Club, Club Giraud, Rolling Rock Club, Spouting Rock Beach Association, The Charity Ball and was a lifetime supporter of the San Antonio Symphony and the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas. She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church and was an avid supporter of Operation Comfort and the Wounded Warriors Project. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Dean McCracken and his devoted staff, as well as all the nurses on the 3rd floor Oncology unit of the Methodist Metropolitan Hospital. In addition, the family would like to give special thanks to the devoted staff of VITAS hospice for all of their care and support. Obituary: Betty Wilder Billups died peacefully on 15, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. She was ninety-one. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, 29, 1922, to Hugh Jenkins Wilder and Marjorie Johnson Wilder. She moved with her family to Dallas and started first grade at Stephen J Hay Elementary. The family later moved to Tyler, Texas, where she graduated from John Tyler High School. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's in Lynchburg, Virginia, and then The University of Texas at Austin. In 1943, she met a young United States Air Force Lieutenant, Thomas Carleton Billups IV from Columbus, Mississippi. He was stationed in Greenville, South Carolina, which is where they married in of 1943. At the end of World War II, they moved to Tyler, Texas, and he joined her father in the oil business. living in Tyler for 40 years, she and her husband moved to Columbus, Mississippi, where they lived on a plantation of his childhood until 2007 when they moved to Dallas, Texas. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, president of the Junior League of Tyler, Texas, honorary member and president of The Columbus Garden Club, and treasurer of The Billups Garth Foundation. She and her husband were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Columbus. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years and her son-in-law Dr. Ronald Howell Underwood and is survived by her daughter, Susan Billups Underwood of Dallas; son, Thomas Carleton Billups V and wife Debra Huchel Billups of Columbus, Mississippi and Arlington Virginia; granddaughters Anna Underwood Small and husband Dr. Andrew Buchanan Small IV of Dallas; Catherine Evan Underwood of Dallas; Cameron Billups Peden and husband Andrew Joseph Peden of Arlington, Virginia; great-granddaughters Annabelle Carleton Small and Sarah Margaret Small of Dallas; great-grandson Thomas Joseph Peden of Arlington, Virginia; and sister-in-law Ida Billups Ward of Columbus. The family wishes to thank her wonderful caregivers Rose Mary Walker and Eevette Ratcliffe and the staff of Edgemere and The Plaza at Edgemere where she and Carleton lived in Dallas. A memorial service will be held 17 in Columbus, Mississippi. If desired, memorials may be made to the Billups Garth Archival Room at the Columbus Library, the Palmer for Children in Columbus, or to the charity of your choice. |
