Obituary: Alex Bielss moved to his heavenly home on 3, 2014, at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Ethel, their two children Larry and Kathy, daughter-in-law Barbara, grandson and his wife Danny and Megan, and 2 great grand-children, Jackson and Brooke, as well as sister-in-law Leatrice Bielss and numerous nieces and nephews. Alex was preceded in death by parents Oswald and Ida Bielss, brothers Erich, Emmanuel, and Milton, as well as sisters Elsie Buchhorn, and Olga Drummond. Alexs life exemplifies not only the American Dream, but also the fighting spirit of the Greatest Generation. A true old-school spirit, Alex was a man whose hand-shake and word was worth more than any legal document. From the beginning, Alex fought thru the many harsh realities of life in the 20s and 30s. The son of a farmer, hard work was expected from the beginning – milking and feeding cows, tending to fields, and other daily chores that would eventually mold him into the man he became. Additionally, early tragedy in the death of his brother would help him understand how precious life is and how important God is. He met Ethel early in his life as they both attended the same school and church in Walburg. At 21, Alex and Ethel were married on 1, 1944 having nothing besides each other. Alex was drafted in of 1945 and was sent to basic training in Camp Roberts, in California. Ethel followed via train, only to see Alex shipped to Philippines. Like many of his generation, Alex served in WWII, an infantryman seeing action in the Philippines. Once he returned from the battlefield, Alex enrolled in GI school learning valuable skills such as welding, mechanics and other trade skills that he would use throughout his life. With a toddler in the house and another soon on the way, Alex would take these classes at night so that he could be home during the day to provide for both his wife and young family. Upon his return from the war and with very little money, Alex rented a house and some land from his uncle and began planting the seeds of what would be his lifes work. In conjunction with farming his uncles land, Alex also farmed what had been his childhood homes farm. Together with these two farms, as well as baling hay and stripping cotton for the neighbors, Alex worked diligently to keep the family afloat. When the drought of the 50s gripped Central Texas, Alex found a job at Griggs Manufacturing making school and office furniture. His sacrifices for his family were evident in so many ways, doing what it took to make sure all of lifes needs were met. He also worked at Scarboroughs wrapping Christmas presents, saved money at every possible turn, always making sure the family had what it needed. Always keeping an eye to the future, Alex and Ethel managed to save enough to eventually buy their own farm in 1976. Only miles from where they both grew up, this farm would prove the ultimate culmination of his lifes work. Throughout his life, Alex was always involved with his church. From singing in the choir to serving in a multitude of board positions, Alex always wanted to make sure that Christ was at the center of his life. This proud heritage was passed to his children, grandchild, and great-grandchildren. In his free time, Alex enjoyed working at the VFW, cooking BBQ for his family, and playing Sheephead – a German card game – with his family. thru Alex worked hard, but enjoyed his time at both church and especially with his family. Travel was another passion, with multiple trips to Branson, Missouri topping the list. Calgary, Canada, and the Amish portion of Pennsylvania also stand out as places he reminisced on. He was also a teacher of lifes lessons. He passed on his love of fishing, secretly teaching both patience and appreciation of Gods blessings of food. When something broke down, he would explain not only the best way to fix it, but also teach both discipline and responsibility to those involved and the pride of fixing something. The work he did was hard, but he always did it with a smile on his face. When his tractor rolled over him and broke his leg, it took a small army to keep him from continuing to work. Alex worked into his mid - 80s, always caring about his cattle, his crops, and ultimately his family. All who knew him never doubted his loyalty to this country, his deep love of his wife, his grand desires for his children, and his never-ending faith. His presence will be missed, but his life, faith, and love will live on thru all he touched. A special thank you to the Hospice Giving Staff: Sara, Manual, and Marion. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the St. Peter Fund or Hospice Compassus. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on , 6, 2014 at Ramsey . services will be at 2:00 p.m. on , 7, 2014 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas. Burial will follow at St. Peter with military honors. You may share a message or memory in the memorial guestbook at www.Ramsey .com.
