Obituary: Howard Thomas Bengtsons wonderful journey of life ended where it had begun 80 years earlier, at St. Davids Hospital in Austin, Texas. Howard was a Valentines Day baby, born on 14th, 1935, the youngest of three children, to Harry Lenox Bengtson, Sr. and Laura Esther Corinne Lindahl. He passed away peacefully, with his sons by his side, early in the morning on 28th, 2015, after unexpected serious complications following a fall at his residence.

Howard is survived by his two loving sons A (Cynthia) and B (Jennifer); grandchildren Brandon, Kendall, Parker, Courtney and Lauren, all of Austin. He is also survived by his sister Harriette Flachmeier of Dallas and his brother Harry Bengtson, Jr., and his wife Martha, of Austin. He also leaves behind five nieces and one nephew, Gayle Covington of Austin, Kyle Bengtson of Austin, Laurie Corbelli of Station, Lee Davis of Dallas, Leslie Love of Austin, and Lin Cerles of San Francisco, and their families. In addition, Howard is survived by numerous cousins and many friends.

Howard was baptized in the Old Swedish Methodist Church, which later became Central Methodist Church. He attended Matthews Elementary School, Allen Junior High and Austin High School, enjoying sports and social activities, before enrolling in the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While in college, Howard joined the National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge in 1963 after attaining a rank of Master Sergeant. While serving, he attended Advanced Army Administration School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana.

college, he was hired by Isom Hale Associates, an engineering consulting firm, where he worked as a business consultant before he and his lifelong friend, Truman Breed, joined together to buy Everett Hardware in 1970. In 1974, Howard moved to San Antonio and joined the firm of Snowden & Meyer as a Project Manager and Land Planner. Early in the 1980s, Howard was hired by Dan Parman to help develop subdivisions north of downtown San Antonio toward Loop 1604, and eventually established Bengtson Planners & Associates. Wanting to move back to Austin, Howard joined Espy Houston & Associates to focus on major land development. In 1996, he was hired by the Professional Golf Association of America, raising money for junior golf and thoroughly enjoying his work until retiring in 2006.

Howard was extremely knowledgeable and well-rounded, able to speak to anyone about virtually anything, and do it well. He was very conversant on many issues, usually having an interesting story about any topic at hand. Crossword puzzles and Jeopardy were no match for him. He had many circles of friends, from all facets of life, and fit in very well in all settings, whether it was with childhood friends, work colleagues, or people half his age or less. He had a knack for making everyone laugh but never with sarcasm. He just had a way about him that engaged others in a very easy-going way.

Sports was a major passion of his, whether he was playing or watching. He took pride in his two holes in one. He liked watching all sports but cheered hardest for the University of Texas.

Music, oh the music. Howard loved it. Jazz was his favorite but almost any music would satiate him.

In recent years, he thoroughly enjoyed travelling with his sons, A & B, whether it was to play golf at Pebble Beach, to go to the 2nd most exciting Rose Bowl of all time (the one where Texas beat Michigan with a last second field goal), or to Ruidoso, NM, to see the All American Futurity, followed by a round of golf at the course with the highest altitude in NA, The Lodge in Cloudcroft, NM, where he had often vacationed in earlier years with his good friends.
But what Howard loved most of all was his family. He grew up outdoors playing with siblings and cousins and spending summers at the family lakehouse. He absolutely loved big family outings, playing cards and dominoes and interacting with aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. His face brightened up whenever he saw them. His love for his family was unmatched and he was there to support them at all times.

The family would like to thank the great people at The Summit at NW Hills (Brookdale) that so graciously welcomed Howard to their community in 2014 as well as his doctors and nurses that worked so hard to heal him over these final weeks. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Ed Chafizadeh, who not only provided excellent care but befriended Howard and went out of his way to make sure he got everything imaginable to make his hospital stay as comfortable as possible.

Services to celebrate Howards life are scheduled for 2 PM , 4th, 2015 at Cook-Walden , 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas 78752

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice or to the First Tee of Greater Austin.

Obituary: Florian Charles Bud Bengele, 87, of Helotes, formerly of Houston, passed away peacefully on 24, 2017, with his loving family keeping a constant vigil at his bedside. Born on 17, 1929, he was the son of the late Florian Charles Jr. and Marie Catherine (Felix) Bengele. He entered this world as a mere Speck, a nickname given to him by the nurses at Mercy Hospital in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, as he was only 4 ½ pounds. Young Florian grew up in Loretto, Pennsylvania, initially on the summer estate of steel magnate Charles Schwab, where his father was employed as a manager.

In 1932 his father died unexpectedly, leaving his mother, a young widow with three children and one on the way. His mother worked hard to provide for her family both financially and spiritually. Breaking gender barriers, she successfully petitioned for an appointment as postmaster for the small village of Loretto. She held this position for decades until her retirement. The priests from the local parish served as role models for her children, particularly the late Father Regis OBrien with whom Bud had a lifelong bond as a father figure.

Bud received his education from Cambria High School in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania and St. Francis in Loretto. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and thereafter, Osaka, Japan, where he worked as a medical technologist. While in San Antonio, he met his future wife, Cecilia Boecker, who was attending college at Incarnate Word. Bud and Cecilia married on 26, 1956 in Weslaco, Texas, Cecilias home town. settled in Houston where they lived for many years and raised 5 children. Family and faith were always top priorities in the Bengele household, where love was abundant and respect and support given unconditionally. While in Houston, they were longtime members of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church. This past , Bud and Cecilia celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. With their original best man, Buds brother, Bill, and maid of honor, Cecilias sister, Dorothy, by their side, they received a blessing from their parish priest, Fr. Carlos J. Davalos.

Bud had a lifelong career working for the U.S. Postal Service, starting at the age of 10, when he interned for his mother by helping to clean the Loretto branch. He continued to work there, part-time while in school and eventually full time. his engagement to Cecilia, he transferred to the main branch of the Houston Post Office where he eventually was promoted to supervisor. He remained at the main branch until his retirement in 1985.

In their retirement years, Bud and Cecilia traveled throughout the U.S. as well as the Canadian Rockies, Scotland and Australia. relocated several times to Weslaco, Texas, Battlement Mesa, Colorado and Kerrville, Texas prior to making Helotes their new home. In Helotes, Bud joined the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
