Obituary: Major Robert James Bell, a true patriot, an officer and a gentleman, passed away Sat., 9, 2014 at 3:30pm at Medical Hospital. He fought a long and hard battle with bravery as he did in the service he gave to his country! His loving wife, Orpha Lee Bell was at his side as well as good friends. Bob was born in Fairfield, Iowa by His parents, Ella and Royal Bell who preceded him in death. Bob as his friends referred to him, was a talented and versatile aviator in three wars, WW11, Korea and Vietnam. He dreamed of being an army pilot as he grew up an Iowa farm boy. He got his chance to fly in the Wild Blue Yonder because of the coming of the 1939-1945 WW11. He learned to fly almost every type of plane there was, including the Sikorsky CH-3 Jolly Green Giant helicopter, the P-40 Warhawk and the PT19, as well as the KC135. Bob was assigned to the Strategic Air Command during the Vietnam War. Bob loved to tell stories of his experiences during his war years and he could spell-bound you quickly. His fellow CAF Colonels at Odessa based CAF Desert Squadron held Bell in high esteem as Bob loved all of them. He recently was honored as an inductee into the American Combat Airmen Hall of Fame with others at the CAF airshow in 2013. Bob was a member of the Sherwood Church of Christ and a Christian. He seldom met a man he did not like. Bob is survived by his wife, Lee Bell of Odessa, son Gregory of Denver, Co., daughters Marisue Bell, Linny Miller of Tuscon, AZ., son Tim Bell of Arizona, step-daughter Shelby Smithee of Denver, Co., and two grandsons, Harrison and Brian Bell of Denver. A sister Betty Cottrell of Wyoming, a brother Troy of Arizona, step grandson, Brian Graf serving in Afghanistan , step granddaughters Melanie Graf and Natalie White of Denver. Bob loved to laugh and joke around with all his comrades. He loved old movies, especially war movies and all John Wayne movies. Bob and his wife, Lee have been married for 26 years. He will be greatly missed by her and all his dear friends, especially the CAF members of the Odessa squadron. Family will receive friends from 6-8pm , 12, 2014 at Frank W. Wilson Directors. service will be at 11am , 13, 2014 at Frank W. Wilson Chapel with Lynn Money officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are entrusted to Frank W. Obituary: Robert Lee Bell passed away 29, 2010, at Baylor Medical in Dallas following a brief but valiant struggle with cancer. He will be remembered as a good, honest man with a servants heart, a strong moral compass and an ingrained work ethic. He dearly loved the Lord, his family and his country, and he cherished the friends he made from all occupations and walks of life. His untimely death will leave a void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. Robert was born in Tyler, Texas, 3, 1938, to Burton and Ida Bell. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. A young patriot, he was disappointed that the Navy would not let him begin basic training until he turned 18. serving his country as a naval gunfire control technician aboard the USS James E. Kyes, a US Naval Gearing-class destroyer, Robert joined family in Dallas and entered the civilian workforce. His first job was in the plastics manufacturing industry, followed by a turn at Sonny Bryans, where he picked up a love for barbecue that lasted a lifetime. In 1961 he married Charlotte, who later died of cancer. Robert transitioned to Southern Lead, before joining Employers Insurance in the maintenance department at 1301 Young Street in downtown Dallas. Here he met Linda, who was by his side for the next 28 years. Robert stayed with the building for more than 35 years through various tenants and ownership changes and ultimately formed his own company to oversee the buildings management and maintenance. He was semiretired. He will be missed by his business associates in industries spanning construction to banking. He had a passion for service, with an endearing personal style marked by wisdom, humor and charm. Robert had many interests and talents. He was a voracious reader. He was an outdoorsman and marksman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and outdoor photography. In addition, he was an outstanding cook and took great delight in treating his family to a variety of tasty meats, ice creams and pies. He was a licensed ham radio operator and had recently taught himself to quilt after visiting a quilting museum with Linda. shared a love of travel and had seen much of the country. For 18 consecutive years they visited the bluebonnet fields of Texas and annually returned to the mountains of Colorado. Along the way they explored small towns and back roads, while listening to their favorite country music. Robert took great pleasure in sharing his life with Linda. When his grandchildren were born, he discovered soccer, and he and Linda enthusiastically spent countless days in the heat and cold cheering them on. loved their Grampy, and he loved them dearly. Robert is survived by his wife, Linda; son Will and wife Amy; son Randy and wife Julie; four grandchildren: Christopher and Madeleine Bell, and Ashley and Joel Bell; and sister Lynda and her husband, Johnny McDaniel. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Burton Lester Bell and Ida Frank Johnson, and brother Jerry Bell. A funeral service for Robert will be , 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Rhoton at 1511 South Interstate 35E in Carrollton, Texas, followed by interment at Hilltop Memorial Park in Carrollton.
