Obituary: evening, 1, 2009, the bells in heaven most certainly rang to greet Maudie Bell, Companita Little Bell as she arrived at her eternal home. Most family members and their friends have known her as Meemaw from the time her first grandchild began calling her by that name. However, over the past three years, she was given an assortment of pet names by her loving caregivers at The Forum Gardens. Her bubbly personality gave way to quiet observation; her recognition of you and communication usually came through a little smile and a wink of her eye. It seems that all who had the privilege of knowing Maudie Bell, at sometime during her 90 years, recognized that she was a special woman who loved life and cared deeply about people. She was kind-hearted to the point that her late husband of fifty years, Tom Bell, frequently called her Mother Theresa. Maudie was born to Jeff and Mary Maud Chappell, 1, 1919, in San Antonio. her mothers death three days later, she spent her childhood and teen years outside Stockdale, Texas in the home of her uncle and aunt, John and Cornelia Chappell, surrounded by their loving family. Seven older cousins became adoring siblings and she loved them as sisters and brothers. Maudie was a born teacher. During early WWII years, she worked several part-time jobs simultaneously while attending college to earn teacher certification. Once certified, teaching was in her blood. She began her career in the community of Sayers and continued teaching for 40 years. Most of her teaching years were in the SAISD at Riverside Park Elementary. She loved everything about teaching… the students, the parents, the staff, the custodians, the cafeteria workers, the curriculum. She also enjoyed an affiliation in several teachers organizations, including a charter membership in the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority. She served as president in addition to numerous other responsibilities during the many years of her membership. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and the S.A. Retired Teachers Association up to the time of her death. She is reported to have had the longest continuing membership of this last group on record. In addition to teaching, she enjoyed a supportive role by the side of her husband, Tom Bell, during the many years he worked with the S.A. Livestock Exposition. She took pride in the posthumous ceremony inducting him into the SALE Hall of Fame. She had always taken an active interest in the ranching and cattle industry, riding along to S. Texas ranches, cattle auctions, feed lots or accompanying Tom and their two daughters to national livestock meetings. Some ranching families became life-long friends. She was an avid traveler, enjoying trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, Norway, Canada, Mexico and most of the 50 states. She was always ready to go by car, plane, ship or train! Maudies special joy in life, however, was her five grandchildren. She always found time to bake chocolate chip cookies for them and their friends. One beautiful metal cookie box, which traveled back and forth to their college campuses, has become a family heirloom; her daughter Nella frequently fills it with chocolate chip cookies for Meemaws great-grandchildren. Meemaw was always there to support the grandchildrens sports or special events, just as she had done for her daughters in the past. Her grandchildren, in return, adored her and were greatly pleased that she was able to be a special part of their wedding ceremonies. These beloved grandchildren gave her another of her lifes greatest joys, 10 great-grandchildren. Over the years, she belonged to the fellowship of several Baptist Churches of communities in which she was living: First Baptist Church of Stockdale, Baptist Temple, Manor Baptist, Parkhills Baptist, Churchill Baptist, and Trinity Baptist. Survivors include two daughters: Maudie Jones & Annella Egbert; son-in-law: Dr. Tom Egbert; grandchildren & spouses: Adria Stacha Brian, Erin Daley J.P., Brandi Hollingshead Scott, Ty Egbert Jennifer, Jim Guy Egbert Heather; great-grandchildren: Mitchell & Garrett Stacha, Jud & Luke Daley, Parker & Chappell Hollingshead, Hannah Bell & Tommy Egbert, Rider & Madeline Egbert; sister & brother-in-law: Cora & Dr. Davis Armistead; brother-in law & sister-in-law: Billy W. & Gloria Bell; niece: Shirley Price, who provided Maudie with countless hours of engaging domino games. Other survivors include many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. The family is grateful and appreciative for the loving, compassionate care provided for Maudie by the staff of The Forum Gardens and Vista Hospice. Anyone who desires may make a memorial contribution to SALE Scholarship Fund, 3201 E. Houston, San Antonio, TX 78219 or Alzheimers Assn., 7400 Louis Pasteur Dr., #200, San Antonio, TX 78229. |
