Obituary: Jane Louise Schoch Whitesides Basey

Jane was born to Milton Godfrey Schoch and Anna Ruth Foresman Schoch on 29, 1926 in Freeport, PA. She grew up with her three older siblings, Bette, Milton and Edwin in a strong Christian household. Despite having Polio as a child, she overcame the disease and flourished as a healthy adult.
She married John T. Whitesides in 1948 with whom she had three boys, Jonathan, Christopher, and Edwin. living in many different parts of the country, Jane lost her husband, John, who was a native Texan. Then, as a widow, she settled in Austin in 1960. While living in Austin, she met Milton M. Basey, a widower with two children, Douglas and Marion Basey. married in 1963 and had a son, Thomas.

Jane was a life-long learner, acquiring a Bachelor of Education degree from National of Education in 1947 and began her teaching career in New York. She earned a Master of Education degree in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin. Jane was an elementary school teacher for 31 years, predominantly in Austin. retiring in 1985 and receiving a PhD in Adult Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986, she devoted the majority of her time to her family and to community service. Among others, she volunteered at her beloved Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Austin Groups for the Elderly (serving as president of its board for two years), the Older Adults Commission of Austin Metropolitan Ministries, Austin Adopt-A-School, and Hospice Austin. In addition, Jane taught exercise classes to older adults for ten years. She was a child of God, a naturalist, an avid bird lover, singer, pianist, writer, and traveler. Her desire to learn led her to travel through the Elderhostel Program with her husband Milton, taking her to such places as Israel, Mexico, and Italy, to name a few.

Janes Christian faith was founded in the Episcopal Church, and because of this strong foundation, she shared peace and love with so many of whom she came in contact. She believed in affirmation, acknowledgment, and acceptance. Her countless friendships are a testimony to this. In addition, she wanted to be a connector, explorer and questioner. All of these made Jane the special person that she was.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, niece, and friends. She is survived by her children and their spouses, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She will be greatly missed, but her impact on those around her will never be forgotten and that can be said to be her greatest legacy.

A memorial service for our beloved Jane, Mother, Grandma/Granny and friend will be held at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection located at 2200 Justin Ln, Austin, TX 78757 at 11:00 a.m. on , 24, 2017.
