Obituary: Born 12/12/1921 in Floresville, Tx., died 12/12/2014 at the age of 93 in Beaumont, Tx. after a long illness. He was a long time resident of Corpus Christi from 1955-2010. He and his wife, Estella Barragan, moved to Beaumont to live under the care of his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Donnie Mazone. He grew up in Floresville and San Antonio Texas. enlisting in the Texas Army National Guard at the age of 17, he served with the 124th Horse Cavalry Regiment, along the Texas border during WWII. his first enlistment he worked for Tobin Survey in San Antonio. He moved to Corpus Christi in 1952 and went to work for Atlantic Richfield where he retired after thirty-two years of employment. While employed with ARCO he re-enlisted in the naval reserves and served as a member of “The Fighting Seabees” of MCB-22. In 1968 his unit was activated and he served a tour in Vietnam, Republic of, from 1968-1969. Upon completion of his tour he returned to work in both his civilian and military capacities. He retired from the US naval reserves with 32 years of service in 1977. He also retired from ARCO that same year. doing independent contract work for several oil companies he went back to work full-time with Coastal Oil and Gas for another 10 years. He was not one to sit still. He was a dependable, conscientious, trustworthy, and loyal employee. These characteristics came easily to him because they were a permanent part of who he was. He was known as a well-disciplined, well organized, and thrifty man that could be counted on to accomplish any task he was given. Raised during the great depression, he lived by the adage of “a penny saved is a penny earned”, a trait that would serve him well during his working and retirement years. Freemasonry was a huge part of his life for almost 60 years. He was Past Master of Corpus Christi Masonic Lodge #189 in 1990-1991. He was a Knight of the York Rite Cross of Honor, as a member of Texas Priory 23 as well as Texan Priory 78, by virtue of having served as presiding officer of all four York Rite bodies: Corpus Christi Lodge #189, Royal Arch Chapter 91, Royal and Select Council 55, and Knights Templar Commandary 57. He was a Past Sovereign of South Texas Conclave, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, and a Charter Member of South Texas York Rite 169. He was a 32nd degree member of San Antonio Scottish Rite. He received the Order of the Silver Trowel, Order of High Priesthood, and the degree of Super Excellent Master and was a member of Al Amin Shrine Temple and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member and past president of John Jay Harris Chapter of the National Sojourners. Alex was regarded as one of the most beloved and distinguished freemasons of south Texas. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodwork, barbequing and especially music. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Estella, his beloved grandmother Rosario “Nanny” Young, mother Mary Young, father Alexander Barragan Sr., son James Miller, daughter Karmella Barragan, and son-in-law Donnie Mazone. He is survived by his brother Robert Barragan, sister, Dolores Buckingham, his children Robert Barragan, Aida Hernandez, Belinda Barragan, Gerald Barragan, Kathryn Mazone, Alex Barragan III, and Jeffery Barragan, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and a host of long time and loyal friends. Visitation will be held on , 18th, 2014 from 3:00pm until 9:00pm with a prayer service to be held at 6:30pm the same evening. A mass will be celebrated on , 19th, at 10:00am at the Corpus Christi Cathedral with interment to follow at Memory Gardens . |
