Obituary: BALCOM
Mrs. Rita A. Balcom age 96, of San Antonio, died , 8, 2011. Rita volunteered at Christus Santa Rosa for over 35 years in numerous officer positions in the Christus Santa Rosa Auxiliary. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Chip Balcom and a sister, Mildred. She is survived by her sons, Carl Hichman and his wife, Jackie, Donald Hichman and his wife, Linda, Douglas Hichman and wife, Irene; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren, and sister Hilda. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to CSR Rita Balcom Scholarship Fund, c/o Christus Santa Rosa Auxillary, 333 North Santa Rosa, San Antonio, Texas 78207. Some of you knew her as Rita. Some called her Mom, and some of us called her Grandma, Gram or Aubreys favorite.Hi Granny! What a life Grandma had. She was part of so many new things that have advanced society today. Cars, television and so much more that we take for granted .she was there to see it First. A pioneer in her own way, she was the first to go to college in her family and receive a degree in French and a minor in history. Some of you might not now know she was a beauty queen, receiving the title of Cherry Blossom Queen of Webster,N.Y. She then went on to raise three boys, whom were the apple of her eye. As a single mother, she ran her own printing business and started a local paper called the Weekly Enterprise. selling her business, she went to work for the Post Star of Glens Falls newspaper and become the first woman to become a lino type setter, a job always held by men. She also became the first woman to become part of the Printers Union. I don think we would have expected anything less from her. working for so many years she decided to retire and give her life to volunteer work. She became a volunteer in Glens Falls, NY hospital. Shortly after she decided to become a winter Texan and split her time between San Antonio and her home town. Here she met Rory Rivera, another volunteer, that introduced her to Santa Rosa hospital and I think that is were she fell in love with it. many years of making the trip back and forth by her self to New York for the summer until the age of 79, we finally talked her into making her home San Antonio. Even though Grandma was so involved at the hospital, she always found time for her family. I remember coming home from school and smelling her famous peanut butter cookies. Just the right size and perfect little stars she would make with a fork on them. She taught me to love spinach, brussel sprouts but I could never do the Lima Beans. (Sorry grandma I know there good for me) We used to love having grandma make dinner, because we knew that with her dinner always came a delicious dessert. According to Grandma dinner was NOT complete until dessert was served. Grandmas love and respect for Christus Santa Rosa was so much that she wanted to help the Auxilary raise funds for many different projects. It was amazing to see her doing the books for the Auxilary. I don think many of you know this but all of the ledgers she kept were all done by hand and she never once used a calculator. She would be so proud of herself --at the end of the month she would tell us how much money they had raised for the year and through these fundraising efforts were able to give gifts of hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. If there is one thing we take from Grandmas life is following her life of servitude. She taught us to give and not to receive, to love and not expect anything in return. I think Winston Churchill said it best We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. by Heidi Hichman
