Obituary: Henry Travis Bailey, 86, of Stockdale, died night, 25th at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Travis was born in Austin on 9, 1918 to Henry Travis Bailey and Mary Clark Bailey of Rockport. Travis was the fifth generation of BaileyÂs in Rockport, dating back to the mid-1800Âs. Travis attended high school in Rockport and Schreiner in Kerrville. He had two life-long avocations; flying and sailing. Travis interest in flying developed at an early age, as his father had been an Air Force pilot during WWI and had trained at Kelly Field in San Antonio. While attending Schreiner, Travis enrolled in the Army Air Forces CPT program, an early ROTC-like plan for training college students to become military pilots. college, Travis joined the Air Force and served from 1941 to 1946. He was an officer in the Western Flying Train Command. He trained glider pilots for the glider assault behind enemy lines in Europe. He also trained single and twin-engine pilots and was the Director of Flying for the B-25 Advanced Training School. flying and instructing for nearly four years, Travis was deployed to the China, Burma, India Theater of Operations with the Flying Tigers. He flew P-38Âs as a photo-reconnaissance pilot and served as Squadron Commander there until the end of WWII. Travis returned from the war to settle in Northern California where he became a real estate developer and launched the Flying Acres resort in the mountains northeast of San Francisco. In the early Â60s, Travis moved with his family back to Texas. He continued to develop real estate, and to pursue his love for flying in high performance sailplanes. He was an active member of the Soaring Society of America and the Refugio Soaring Club. He attained his Diamond Badge and spent many hours soaring the skies of south and central Texas. In 1978, Travis relocated to the San Antonio area and became interested in the development of Âairport communitiesÂ. In 1983, he moved to Stockdale and built a hangar/home and airport for light aircraft. He continued to fly both power planes and sailplanes, and even built his own experimental aircraft. Travis flying career spanned more than 55 years and covered a wide variety of aircraft from military fighters to small composite homebuilts. His other passion, sailing, and especially racing, would be as broad, and last even longer. As a small boy in Rockport, Travis and his brother, O.C.Buck  ode their paint ponies to town to supervise goings-on at the Westergarde boat building shop. Often, the work in progress was a new design for their father, the senior Travis Bailey, and by the time the boys had reached their teens, Travis and his brother were  urned loose in the family boats. sailed the waterways from Corpus Christi to Houston, always looking for another boat to race. Travis, along with his brother and father, were instrumental in helping establish and sustain a sailing community in Rockport. In 1970, Travis helped found, and served as the first commodore of the Rockport Sailing Club. During the years in California, Travis continued sailing and racing. He organized a fleet of El Toros on an inland lake, and had all five of his children racing the small sailing prams while they were still in grade school. Travis competed in Finn Olympic Trails in San Francisco in the Â60s, raced Cal boats in the Texas Gulf in the Â70s, and J22Âs on Canyon Lake in the early Â90s. In 1998, at the age of 80, Travis made his first offshore passage from San Diego to Honolulu in his 42-foot Valiant, Flight, accompanied by his wife, Holly, and his son, Frank. Travis was a member of the Rockport Yacht Club, the Lake Canyon Yacht Club, and the Waikki Yacht Club. Travis was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, O.C. Buck; and by his son, Henry Travis III Hank. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Holly Beckley-Bailey; his former wife, Frances Mayo Bailey of Stockton, CA; two sons, Frank Victor Bailey of Corpus Christi and Travis Mayo Bailey of Hemet, CA; and two daughters, Mary Ann VanDoren of Freehold, NJ and Catherine Frances Babcock of San Luis Obispo, CA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Chris VanDoren of Dallas, Tx and Cara Wilner of Seattle, WA; Emily and Gracie Babcock of San Luis Obispo, CA; Travis Clark Bailey of Corpus Christi, TX; and Amy Bailey-Gordon of London, England. |
