Obituary: Mrs. Betty Lou Byrd, 80 of Lawrenceburg passed away 30, 2017. She was of Baptist faith for 60 years and a homemaker. Visitation will be held 1, 2017 from 5-8:00 p.m. at Pettus-Turnbo . Obituary: Ben Byrd, the former Sports Editor of The Knoxville Journal, died , 12, 2016 at Ben Atchley Veterans . He was 91. The son of Claude R. and Helen King Byrd, Ben was born 11. 1925, in South Knoxville. He graduated from Young High School in 1942, and in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster aboard the U.S.S. Borum. Byrd and his shipmates took part in the D-Day invasion on 6, 1944. Following the end of the war, Byrd returned to Knoxville and enrolled in the University of Tennessee, where he was recruited out of a journalism class to a position as a reporter on The Knoxville Journal sports staff. He was named Sports Editor in 1969. During his nearly five decades at the Journal, Byrd was best-known for his column, Byrds Eye View. He also covered University of Tennessee basketball and football, the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, and the Montreal and Los Angeles Olympics. Byrd was named Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association five times and was a member of both the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother, Claude R. Byrd, Jr. Ben is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan; sons, Rick(Cheryl) of Nashville and Emmett (Alice) of Concord, N.C.; daughter, Kathy (Leonard Butts) of Maryville; and four granddaughters, Lauren, Andrea, Megan, and Courtlin. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm until 4:00pm 14, 2016 at Berrys , 3704 Chapman Highway, with services to follow at 4:00 pm. Burial will take place 11:00am , 15, 2016 at Woodlawn . Obituary: Angelia Hope Byrd, 61, passed away on ( 12, 2017) surrounded by her loving family. Hope was born on 28, 1955 in Kingsport, TN to Arthur Reed & Agnes (Thurman) Minor. Hope married the love of her life Dale Byrd on 16, 1973, and after 44 years of a wonderful marriage, he survives. Hope found solace in gardening, collecting antiques, and spending time with her family. She was a dedicated employee at Eastman Credit Union for the past 12 years. Hope was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend; she will be greatly missed. Hope was preceded in death by her sister, Debbie Jones; and nephew, Josh Jones. Left to cherish her memories are her loving husband, Dale Byrd; parents, Arthur Reed & Agnes Minor; sister, Doris Williams; brothers-in-law, Don Williams and Tim Jones & wife Dee; special daughter, Jennifer Gordon; niece, Holly Byrd; nephews, Eric Jones & wife Nicole, Chris Williams & wife Nekesha, and Nick Williams ; several great-nieces, and great-nephews, extended family and a host of friends. The family will greet guests and share memories on ( 15, 2017) from 6 to 8 p.m. at East Lawn . services will follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel of East Lawn with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Obituary: Annie Allison Caldwell Byrd died 7, 2015. Born 3, 1924, she was the daughter of Meredith and Ellen Thomas Caldwell, and granddaughter of James E. and May Winston Caldwell and John W. Thomas Jr. and his wife Dillie Duncan. She attended Parmer School, Ward Belmont School (class of 1942), and graduated from Vanderbilt University in three years. She was on the swim team and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was a navigator for the Civil Air Patrol during WWII. She married Benjamin Franklin Byrd, Jr. in 1950 on the grounds of the family home at Belle Meade Plantation in the presence of family and friends with music provided by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Dr. Byrd was quoted as saying “She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.” Even with six children at home, she supported her husband in his national and international medical interests, accompanying him on his American Cancer Society outreach visits to Russia during a warming of relations, sailing the Nile on Anwar Sadat’s barge in Egypt, and walking the Great Wall of China. She was a member of the Junior League of Nashville, the Vanderbilt Aid Society, and the Monteagle School Assembly. She volunteered for the Middle Tennessee Pony Club while her children were active. She had the Caldwell sense of humor and dry wit. She also had a keen eye for the Southern Decorative Arts, which she shared with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her last years with a great host of friends, her sister, and her dinner group at Richland Place. Mrs. Byrd is survived by her sister, Shirley Caldwell-Patterson, and by her six children: Benjamin Franklin Byrd, III (Mary Holiday), Barney Duncan Byrd (Elena Camacho), Damon Winston Byrd (Susan Maloney), Andrew Wayne Byrd (Marianne Menefee), Evelyn Byrd Blackmon (Stephen), and J. W. Thomas Byrd (Donna Callahan). She was loved by eleven grandchildren who knew her as “Mother Bear”: Marianne Byrd Sabis (Christopher), Valere Byrd Fulwider (Benjamin), Andrew Wayne Byrd, Jr. (Ashley Williams), Allison Byrd Freeman (Scott), Ellen Beverly Byrd, Caroline Lindsey Byrd, Benjamin Franklin Byrd IV, Meredith Marie Byrd, James E. Caldwell Byrd, Madeleine Elizabeth Byrd, and Ainsley Rachel Willow (Blue) Byrd. She also had six great -grandchildren: William Franklin Fulwider, Audrey Claire Fulwider, Robert Edward Sabis, John Andrew Sabis, Thomas Hamilton Freeman, and Eloise Sheppard Byrd. Having a big heart, she never met a stray child or cat she didn’t take up in her arms, including her most recent companion, Catso.
