Obituary: Blomeke, Margaret Boruff, 89, a resident of Shannondale care went home to be with her Lord on 22 , 2011. Her passing marks the end of a valiant 20-year fight with cancer. Born 30, 1921 to Hugh M. and Cuba Fisher Boruff, Margaret grew up in Fountain City, attended Central High School and graduated from Knoxville Business in 1941. She worked as the Stenographer to the Personnel Director of the Aluminum of America in Alcoa before joining the steady influx of workers into Oak Ridge. There, she served first as Secretary to the Head of the Dupont Engineer Works Training School and then as Secretary to the Head of the Technical Divisions Research Department at Clinton Laboratories. In , 1945 she was awarded a certificate from the U.S. War Department Army Service Forces Corps of Engineers for her participation in work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II. While working in Oak Ridge, she met John Blomeke, whom she married in 1946. the war, the couple lived in Austin, Texas where Margaret worked as Secretary to the Mayor. then moved to Atlanta where her husband completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at Georgia Tech. The family moved back to Oak Ridge in 1949, and following the births of a son and daughter, Margaret became a full time homemaker to raise her family in Knoxville. During those years she served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, Troop leader for the Girl Scouts and worked with the Sterchi School PTA and other volunteer efforts. She served as Chairman of the first Fountain City Dogwood Trail and was a Charter member and first President of the Woodland Hills Garden Club. Her interests were gardening, decorating, homemaking, traveling with her husband, genealogy, and Bible study. In her later years she developed a fierce interest in national politics. Margaret was a long time member of Ft. City Presbyterian Church and more recently of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge. Margaret is survived by her son, Hugh D Blomeke and wife Kaye of Crownsville, MD and her daughter, Linda B. Hurst and husband Donald of Knoxville. Grandchildren are Navy Lieutenant John J. Blomeke and wife Bethanie of Virginia Beach; Joshua L. Hurst and wife Kati of Charlotte, NC, and Abby C. Hurst of Knoxville. A Great grandchild, Clare E. Blomeke also resides in Virginia Beach. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John O. Blomeke; parents, Hugh and Cuba Boruff and brother, Henry V. Boruff. services have been set for 28 , 2011 at the Lynhurst -Greenwood Chapel at 2100 Adair Drive in Fountain City, Dr. C.N. Willborn officiating. Obituary: View Webcast Mrs. Sue Whitaker Blocker, 78, died , 28, 2016 at her residence on Trotwood Avenue. services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1864, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury native was the daughter of the late Francis E. Whitaker and Sara Goff Whitaker. On May 24, 1955 she married Clifford Gene Blocker who preceded her in death on 13, 1979. Mr. & Mrs. Blocker owned and operated Cliffords Big Apple Market until his death; after which time, she was employed at Helms and Macys for several years. For the past few years, she had strung pearls for Jewelers Bench and R. C. May Jewelers. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and loved birds. Mrs. Blocker was a member of First United Methodist Church but had more recently attended Bigbyville United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Blocker (Mark) Keene of Columbia; son, Todd (Linda Layne) Blocker of Columbia; grandchildren, Bethany (Matthew) Moss, Jennifer Bridge, Kelsey Blocker, and Katie Blocker; great grandchild, Wyatt Bridge; sister, Cynthia Page Britton of Columbia; nieces and nephew, Dawn Hudson, Courtney (Garry) Love, and David Gibbs; great nieces, Ava Love and Abby Love. Pallbearers will include David Gibbs, Matthew Moss, Garry Love, II, Josh Cozart, Rick Miller, Robert Marshall, Shane Clark, and Jim Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers include Past employees of Cliffords Big Apple Market. |
