Obituary: COLUMBIA Mary Malissa Ratliff Burnette, 87, passed away on 21, 2015 with her family by her side. Born 12, 1927 in Morven, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Mary Katherine Ratliff. She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Harvey L. Burnette. Ms. Burnette graduated from Morven High School in 1944 and Greensboro in 1948 with a B.A. Degree where she earned top honors. She later continued graduate studies in guidance counseling at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Ms. Burnette reared five girls in her rural hometown of Morven, N.C. during the 1950’s before the family moved to Bowling Green, Ohio in 1960, then to Columbia, S.C. in 1968. Ms. Burnette taught at Hand Middle School and Julia Bates School. Throughout her life, Ms. Burnette was devoted to her family and to the education of her daughters and grandchildren. She cherished friendships both old and new and especially valued reunions with Greensboro classmates. She will be most remembered for her gentle spirit, tolerance of others and generous heart. Ms. Burnette was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia where she was a long-time member of the Holroyd Class and enjoyed visiting the Dawsey Class. She was a member of the Julia Grady Circle (Circle 3) and the Lilac Garden Club. Ms. Burnette is survived by four daughters, M. Malissa Burnette and her husband, Michael G. LeFever of Columbia, S.C., Mary Margaret Burnette of Columbia, S.C., M. Melanie Burnette and her husband, Harry Glah of Millersville, Penn., and M. Michele Burnette of Columbia, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Grant Burnette LeFever, Walter Elder (Estefi), Katherine Elder, Lucas Elder (Lydia), Graeson Burnette-Peake, Abigail Burnette-Peake, Savannah LeFever, and Ian Redmon Burnette. She also is survived by two brothers, Charles Edward Ratliff, Jr. (Ruth), John P. “Jack” Ratliff (Betty); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Marsha Burnette. The family wishes to thank the caring staff from Tri- Hospice who helped Mom through her final days, as well as Beverly Neeley, and the many friends who visited and sent words of encouragement. The family will greet friends at the home of Malissa Burnette and Mike LeFever on 23, 2015 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm (2721 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC 29205). A memorial service will be held at a later date at Morven United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201; Morven United Methodist Church, c/o Jack Ratliff, PO Box 336, Morven, NC 28119; or to a charity of one’s choice. |

Obituary: Greer, SC- Larry Steven Burnette, age 57, passed away on , 10, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. A native of Buncombe , he was the son of the late Jack Johnson and Vivelene Cora Atkins Burnette and was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles. He was employed by Thomas and Howard Wholesale and was most recently employed with Depot. Larry was a kind-hearted, generous man who was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed reading and studying history and collected many books on the subject. Larry traveled across the United States visiting museums and battlefields and also loved watching the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Braves. He will be deeply missed by his family and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, Matthew Steven Burnette, of Hendersonville, NC; two sisters, Sylvia Bartlett of Greer, SC and Kathy Metcalf; an aunt, Lillian Jordan of Canton; a nephew, Nathan Bartlett and his wife, Kathryn, of Myrtle Beach, SC; two nieces, Keri Wilson and her husband, Kris, of Asheville, NC and Erin Crouse and her husband, Matthew, of Hickory, NC; great-nieces and nephews, Robert and Alexander Bartlett, Griffin, Rhyan Kathryn, and Ana Wilson, Landon Crouse; and many beloved cousins. service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 14, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells . The Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church with Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Obituary: Jamye Parker Burnette COLUMBIA \ Memorial services for Jamye P. Burnette will be held at 1:00 p.m. , Dec. 30, 2014 at Caughman-Harman Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Jamye was born Dec. 30, 1927 in Columbia, SC and passed away , Dec. 23, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Alton B. and Helen Mixon Parker. She was married to the late George B. Burnette, (d. 1981). Jamye graduated from Dreher High School in 1944, and attended the University of South Carolina. She was an award winning actress at the Florence and Columbia community Theaters. Many years were spent raising her four children, who always knew they were loved. She also worked for the Leukemia Society and WIS radio. With a perfectly timed raised eyebrow and her quick wit, Jamye kept her family and many life long friends laughing. She is survived by her daughters, Rosemary B. (Fred) Schlensker of Ballston Lake, NY and Jan B. Gunderson of New Bern, NC; sons, Christopher B. Burnette of Lexington and David P. Burnette of Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by 8 cherished grandchildren, sister, Betsy P. Baker, brother, Brooks Parker, daughter-in-law Susan L. Burnette and many loving nieces and nephews. |
