Obituary: The following was a profile written on Sally a few years ago for the Emerson House newsletter: Sally Boyd celebrated her 91st birthday last at Emerson House. Here are a few highlights from her interesting and long life. Sally was born on 5, 1916 in New London, CT. Although she was named Adelaide, she never liked the name and has always been called Sally. She was born the third child of a Navy family. There would be a total of five children. Her father, Yates Stirling Jr., was a Rear Admiral in the US Navy and moved the family around the world throughout Sally’s childhood. While Sally was growing up, she lived in many different places including San Francisco and Long Beach, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Brooklyn, New York; Honolulu, Hawaii; Paris, France; and Shanghai, China. As her father’s navel career took him to new ports, the family followed him. In 1927, her father became the Commander of the Yangtze Patrol in Shanghai. In 1930, her father took command of the 14th Navel District, including the navel base at Pearl Harbor and all naval activities in the Hawaiian Islands. Sally, her parents, and her younger brother and sister lived in Hawaii for almost three years. leaving Hawaii, Sally’s father became the commander of the 3rd Naval District in New York. With a Rear Admiral as a father, Sally was introduced to “Society” at the first “Bachelor’s Cotillion.” She was a debutante along with her cousin, Miss Margaret Pembroke Thom. The “Baltimore Sun” reported that a luncheon would be held in their honor. Sally’s debutante picture appeared In the “Baltimore Sun” in 1935. She was pictured next to the family fireplace wearing a white satin gown with ostrich-feather trimming. high school, Sally attended Packer Collegiate Institute in New York to learn secretarial skills. She wanted to enroll in Art school but it was not considered a suitable choice by her family. She became a typist for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) near Washington DC and worked there for 6 years. World War II had begun and there was a call for women to join the branches of the military. Sally was quoted in the “Baltimore Sun,” “…I was getting restless and wanted some excitement.” Sally joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1943 and served until she was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon joining, she was interviewed by the “Baltimore Sun” about her decision. “The prospect of torpedoes and bombs doesn’t bother me a bit,” Miss Stirling said. “No matter how tough the army is, I won’t mind it. I’ve been brought up in the service and know what to expect.” She endured 6 weeks of boot camp and then was sent to the Army’s Cooks and Bakers school. She still has the official Army cookbook with recipes including “Tuna Surprise” for 200 people. Although she loved cooking, the work was dirty, hot, too much heavy lifting, and rats to contend with in the South Pacific and on-board ships. She had spent most of her military time stationed in New Guinea in the South Pacific. the war ended, she and her friend Hazel embarked on the “great adventure of civilian life.” were headed to Alaska and stopped off in Portland and Sally never left. Sally went to work for a Steamship company as a secretary. She was a dedicated and loyal employee for 10 years. She joined the American legion, Dana King Post #137, the only all women Post in Portland. She made many friends. She volunteered over 500 hours at the Portland Veteran’s hospital in the 1950’s. Through her involvement with the American Legion, she met Morris Boyd. married in 1949 and bought a house in the Rocky Butte area of Portland. only child, Jane, was born in 1959. liked to hike, camp, fish, cross-country ski, and tour the Northwest. Morris drove an old Jeep and would take the family on adventures throughout Oregon and Washington. Morris died in 1961. Sally lived in the same house for 47 years. Her house was always filled with animals and kids. She served a Bluebird and Campfire Girls leader for more than 10 years. Each weekly meeting, there were 15 girls that came to the house after school for crafts, refreshments, and lessons. There were always many pets in the house including dogs, turtles, birds, lizards, guinea pigs, a toad named Lumpy, and later cats. Sally was a dedicated volunteer for many years. She volunteered at Jane’s Glenhaven elementary school. She volunteered with the PTA and served as President for two years. She volunteered for back to school clothing drives and community recycling efforts. She was very active in her church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Parish, for nearly 50 years. In her later years, she worked with the church’s community programs to help the homeless by making sandwiches every week. One year, the local Cub Scout program could not find a leader, so Sally volunteered to serve as Den Mother for one year. There were 12 nine year old boys running throughout the house and yard each week. Although Sally was never much of a housekeeper, she loved gardening and grew beautiful fushia plants. She was always searching for a prettier and more unusual fuschia. Sally has lived at Emerson House for almost 5 years and seems to be enjoying herself. She participates in many activities, especially art projects and reading. May Sally have more years to enjoy herself. |
