Obituary: Clarence Oscar Boe On , 13th a beloved father, brother, uncle, and grandfather passed away. He would have been 98 years old on his birthday today, 16, 2010. Although he had a heart attack and cancer years earlier, he was extremely healthy prior to his passing. He died with family at his side, holding his hands. Clarence was born to Arndt and Mary Boe on 16th, 1912 in Canby, Oregon the fourth of six children where his family homesteaded. He enjoyed school sports and played on the football, basketball and baseball teams. He graduated from Canby High School. Clarence married his high school sweetheart, Helena Oliver Boe, on 30th, 1935. were married for 72 years when Helena passed away in 2007. Clarence and Helena were blessed with three children, Merrie Ellen Davies, Karen Morrow and Norman Boe. Clarence was a strong Christian. He will be most revered for his ingenuity, his kindness, and the twinkle in his eye. As to ingenuity, Clarence was the man who could fix or build anything: a car, a washing machine, a water heater or a piece of jewelry. He frequently built desks, armoires, and tables for his family and for his church, the Gateway Baptist. His family dubbed him Mr. Fix It and awarded him a plaque on his 80th birthday. He was generous in every way, thinking of himself last, if at all. As he was in the hospital the last few days of his life, he wanted to make sure his son had enough to eat. He asked several times, Can I buy you a sandwich, Norm? from the ICU. Never mind that he was short of breath from pneumonia. This kindness was evident throughout his life. He was the sort of man who read books to his grand-children. He would get down on the floor to play with an infant (even at 95 years of age). When dining out with family and friends he would slip off and buy dinner for everyone. He worked tirelessly long hours to provide for his family. Whatever support was needed, he gave. His love for family was his joy in life. Clarence was an entrepreneur at heart. He came of age in the Great Depression and that experience instilled a sense of appreciation in him and a strong entrepreneurial work ethic. In the thirties he worked for the Ewauna Box , in a logging camp on Quartz Mountain near Bly, Oregon. He worked 30 days on the job and one day off. During World War II he worked at the Swan Island shipyards as a machinist for the Iron Fireman. the war he owned a gas station, a small grocery store and log truck in Ocean Lake now Lincoln City. In the early 50s he moved his family to Roseburg, Oregon where he and his wife raised their family. He began working for Interstate Tractor for a few years. He was then hired to manage a taxi cab business in town. In 1960 he purchased and managed The Roseburg Taxi Cab until he sold the business in 1973. When he sold the business it had six checker cabs, ran an answering service, operated the Western Union Service, and bought rental houses. He and his wife Helena moved to Portland so they could be near family and semi retired. But, he enjoyed working so he took a job with Superior Lumber & Machine assembling Hydraulic Equipment until age 72 he then retired. Even then, he went on to tend a full garden providing his family with an endless supply of tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, and carrots and doing repair work for his family. In addition to his wife, several people who loved Clarence preceded him in death. Daughters Merrie Ellen Davies in 2004 and Karen Morrow in 2008, and four of his five siblings including Albert, Leonard, Ruth, and Florence. Survivors include: Norman Boe (son), Jessica and Andy Rader (Normans daughter and son in-law), great-grandson Jack, Bill Davies (Merrie Ellens husband) Tracy and Michael Payne (Merrie Ellens daughter), great-grandson Lincoln, Jim Morrow (Karens husband) and Ryan Morrow (Karens son). Nieces and nephews: Wayne Oliver, Vicki Oliver Lang of Canby, CT & Carol Kelly of Abilene, Texas, and several relatives in the Seattle area including Dorothy Boe, Jeannette Hagstrom and his sister Esther Solberg. under the direction of Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.
