Obituary: Robina Duncan Batchelor Burroughs, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and wife to Lyle, finally succumbed to complications from a long illness that she valiantly struggled with for many years, rallying fiercely, bravely and admirably in every way until she could no longer, passing in the dark stillness of night, on 6th, 2017. For her journey had been made, and 'When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.' (Emerson). Our mother had found her own stars in life, loved the eternal stars and their constellations, with the glistening hope and wonder they constantly gave in life's mortality. She was a loved resident at Bellevue and Rehabilitation for four years, where she was admired for her intellect, compassion, wit and humor- often surprising others in her responses, while delighting in exploring differences and playful pursuits. Robina was born on 13th, 1933, in Oklahoma City, to Dr. John Justice Batchelor, a family physician immigrated from Scotland (admired by patients for his skill and kindness), and to Sarajane Craft Batchelor, an Illinois native, who dedicated her life to raising a family of five- Robina, the eldest, helping take care of her playfully mischievous brothers John, Malcolm, Bruce and Gordon- while later pursuing her love of history (MA-OCU), passed on to Robina, who loved the psychology of human nature as well and the natural world, being an avid reader and PBS documentary viewer in those areas. She also continued some work in family geneology early on that her mother had pursued, including Colonial Dames (in which Sarajane later served as president). Robina grew up on Ashton Place, opposite Culbertson Elementary on NE 13th Street, which she attended, going on to Classen High School, and then to University of Oklahoma, where she studied art and literature, self-educating thereafter while continuing her love for drawing. She proceeded to marry Herbert F. Hewett, an attorney hailing from Durant (originally of Fagin, Hewett, Matthews and Fagin), and subsequently had daughters Vanessa and Mara, both attending Casady School, while going to the Art Museum as children for art and ballet lessons, having the good fortune of studying under the loved ballerina Yvonne Chouteau, who asked whether she had been a dancer herself in one of their conversations. This experience 'enriched us immeasurably and ignited our imaginations, [including the wonderful planetarium there], passing on her love of humanity and culture, including books of all kinds by which she was constantly surrounded'. Robina taught elementary at Casady School early on under Dr. Woolsey, where she loved the children and welcomed its challenges, later worked at OCU, and volunteered for Kennedy. She raised us in the wonderful old Oklahoma landscape of wilderness and red earth hills tumbling with streams, being close to the Oklahoma City Zoo, which we adored and visited as often as possible, culminating in a profound adoration for the animals that was shared throughout our lives, with a love for pets, both cats and dogs, and a few happy rabbits. In 1969, she married Dr. Lyle W. Burroughs, a pediatric allergist from Ohio, who practiced from 1961 to his retirement in 1996, at the Oklahoma Allergy Clinic. had one child, Peter, who attended Heritage Hall, excelling in academics and becoming a competitive tennis player. She continued to focus on her family, always dedicated, and enjoyed making marvelous meals and soups, while providing love and support in good and challenging times, always questioning and finding the best in any situation. She radiated a 'special kind of love and understanding', and people strongly 'sensed her energy, vitality, and love for life. Life was not always kind, and misfortunes did befall her, but nothing held her back, and her arms and heart opened with spirit and determination to overcome whatever obstacle lay in her path'. She had a 'courageous, compassionate, and curious spirit', intellectually being described as being ahead of her time, including by Gordon who knew her well, standing by her towards the end. She saved Malcolm's life as a child, and with whom she maintained a wonderful relationship throughout her life. She loved all of her extended family, and always found time for them. Finally, our mother hailed the good and noble, and repudiated the bad, that which corruptly hurt and destroyed, but always tried to understand everything that fell in between, giving full due to place, context, and history. And as much as she loved Harper Lee's Scout, in her braveness for exploring that complexity of truth, she was a good bit of an adult Scout herself, in which she gloriously reveled. She loved Oklahoma immensely, in all its beauty of wildness and expansiveness of sun, land and sky that gave rise to that of spirit and place, and the diversity it generated. Above all, she honored the profound effect of love in life, which Sophocles put this way: "One word frees us of all the weight and pain in Life. That word is Love.' Robina is dearly missed. Robina is survived by Lyle, her husband of 48 years; by her children Vanessa Wardi, husband Yorai (Atlanta), and sons Gabe (San Diego), Michael, and Ben (Atlanta); Mara Hewett (OKC); and Peter Burroughs, wife Ashley (Sarasota,Fla), sons Grant and Dalton. She is also survived by her stepchildren: SaraSue Brooks (Denver),daughter Nikki and son David; Beverly Burroughs (Ruskin,Fla.); and Tom Burroughs (Sun City Ctr., Fla.), wife Sherry, and sons Ryan, wife Jennifer (Pa.), and Evan (Fla.). She is survived by two brothers: Malcolm Batchelor, wife Kay (Washington/OKC), their children Elaine Tatro, husband Jeff (Ca.) sons James and David Dickerson, stepson Evan; Laura, husband Lee Roberson (Edmond), daughters Lilly and Lindsey; and Stuart Batchelor (Edmond). Obituary: Reo Lavern Burroughs, age 90, of Oklahoma City passed into eternal life on 26, 2016, and joined his beloved wife of 43 years, Bess. He died at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Born to Maggie Maybelle and Charles Warren Burroughs on 13, 1925, in Red Oak, OK, he grew up in Oklahoma City as one of 13 children and graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1943. Reo served in the US Navy as a corpsman during World War II. His first assignment was on the USS LST 51 which made multiple trips across the English Channel for the D-Day invasion, treating and carrying wounded soldiers back to England. He later served aboard the USS Thurston and in Oran, North Africa. Reo worked at Oklahoma Gas and Electric for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987. He married Bess Irene McKenzie on 1, 1957, and they spent many happy years together until her death in 2002. He always enjoyed sports, especially basketball and bowling. He loved going to his grand-children's sporting events, and enjoyed many exciting trips to Las Vegas always returning with prizes for the grandkids. Reo was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers. He is survived by his daughter Nancy, husband Tom Shurley, of Denver, CO, their daughters Jennifer, husband Stuart Campbell and Ashley; his daughter Janie of Dallas, TX; his son David, wife Lori of Edmond, OK and their children Josh, wife Amy, Bryan, Kyle and Rachel, husband Sean Ralston; and son Deron, wife Lisa of Mustang, Oklahoma and their son Jacob. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Carter and McKenzie Ralston and Alyssa Burroughs; and sisters Virginia, Dorothy, and Veneda. Services will be held 10:30 a.m., , 30, 2016 at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel. He will be buried next to his wife in Rose Hill Burial Park.
