Obituary: Twila Ann Balzer, 87, of Newkirk, Oklahoma, She passed to eternal rest 24, 2015 in Arkansas City, Kansas. A celebration of her life will be held on , 28, 2015 at the First Christian Church, Newkirk, Ok at 10:30am with burial to follow in the Newkirk . Family visitation will be , 27 from 6-8pm at the First Christian Church in Newkirk. The casket will be closed 15 minutes prior to start of memorial service and will remain closed. Twila Ann (Kail) Balzer was born 20, 1927 in Ralston, Okla. She was the first child of Rose Lorene Bryson and Archie Jacob Kail. She lived in Ralston, Pawnee , Oklahoma, and in the DeNoya oil fields before her parents moved to a farm east of Newkirk on the Arkansas River. She was the granddaughter of Maggie Mitchell and Ross Herbert Bryson and Fanny Susan Eyler and Jacob Kail of Ralston. Granny and Pawpaw moved to their farm, east of Newkirk, in 1939. Twila attended Deer Creek School. While in Newkirk High School, Twila and her cousin Virginia Bryson Simmons boarded in Newkirk with Mrs. Alford due to World War II gas rationing. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1945. She and Vance Balzer were married in 1947. While Vance was on active duty with the Marine Corps, they were stationed together in Washington DC, Rabat, French Morocco and San Diego, Ca. returning to Newkirk from San Diego, they farmed south of Newkirk. In 1960 they purchased a farm in East Bolton Township, Cowley Co, Ks, from Daisy Casement. ran a Grade A Dairy until their farm was acquired by the Kaw Dam Authority. Twila worked for Glass Trucking in Newkirk for 10 years until retirement in 1989. Twila was actively involved in church fellowship and with Extension making Clubs. She belonged to the First Christian Church in Newkirk. She attended Grandview Methodist Church while living in East Bolton. She fulfilled various functions from Bible School to CWF to Church Board Member and many roles in church fellowship. Twila throughout her life belonged to Extension makers Units in Kay and Cowley . The clubs she belonged to included Nip and Tuck, Fun and Fundamental, ITSOK and IXL. Her participation included activities at the local and county level. She and Vance supported 4-H and FFA activities of their children, grandchildren and many other kids. Their legacy in supporting these programs continues today. In the Kail family tradition, Twila was very active in politics as a member of the Kay Election Board. She gleaned her information by daily reading the legal notices and the obituaries (to see if my name is in there) in the local papers. She was an active member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. At the urging of her parents, Twila became involved in the Wheatheart Nutrition Program when meals were served in the old American Legion building and then the meeting building at the Housing Program. Along with Sandra Lockwood and Jane Stolhand, and later Marie Trenary and Irma Bain, Twila was part of the initial energy and activities that resulted in the funding of and completion of the Newkirk Senior . The Wheatheart program included Meals on Wheels in Newkirk. She and others on multiple occasions and for periods of time were responsible for the management of the Wheatheart program when the Directors position was vacant. Twila served for many years on the Council of Human Needs (COHN) in Newkirk. In addition to EHU clubs, Twila was an active member of quilt guilds in Newkirk, Ponca City (evening), and Winfield, Ks (evening). She had a knack and a love of vibrant colors in her quilts. Twila socialized at coffee time which started in the 1950s with Kate Rozell, Colleen Goulden, Vina Wilson, and Albie Bush. When she returned to living in Newkirk she frequented the morning ladies coffee time at the Bakery. She also was active in Golden Agers, Grant and afternoon card clubs. While they were able, she travelled around the US with Evelyn Engelking, Marie Engelking, Katherine Brandon and Neva Balzer. She was a member of the Eastman National Bank travel group and visited England and points across the United States. Twila is survived by : Neva Balzer and fiancé John Lockwood of Newkirk, Traci Matney, Kiara and Kyla Knox and soon to arrive Avery Jordyn Darnell of Dallas, Tx.; Nona Grieshaber and husband Jerry Goza of Dallas, Jennifer Grieshaber, Kevin and Jenna Walter of Manhattan, Ks, Amy Grieshaber and Brandon Tharp of Austin, Tx, and Mary Grieshaber of Dallas; Nevin Balzer of Newkirk; Neal Balzer of Arkansas City, Adam and Kimberly Balzer and Hunter Anderson of Lyndon, Ks; Robert Balzer of rural Newkirk; Brian and Carol Daniels Balzer of rural Arkansas City; Nila and Virgil Brandon of Newkirk, Charlie and Lindsay VanZant Brandon, Piper and Baylin of rural Newkirk, and Kaycee Brandon of Ponca City; Nance and Lee Chamberlain of Arkansas City, Eric Mavis and Jesse Neighbors and JJ Neighbors of Ponca City and Zachary Mavis of Arkansas City, William and Ashlynn Mavis of Blackwell; Neta McWilliams and Dale Davis of Arkansas City, Levi McWilliams of Newkirk, Jamie McWilliams, Coy and twins Lexi and Linen of Newkirk, Chase and Holly McWilliams and Reese of Arkansas City; Chuck and Laci McWilliams and Summer of Fairfax, Okla. Additional survivors are sister Irma Bain of Newkirk, sisters- in-law Karen Kail and Mineva Balzer (S A) Crank of Newkirk and Winona Balzer Reed of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Ross Kail, brothers-in-law J. Wayne Bain and Charles Chuck Reed, great grandson Ryder Steele McWilliams, nephews Lance Reed and Tim Crank. Twila fostered a host of other young men and women over the decades. Her door was always open. There was always room for one or more at her dinner table.
