Obituary: Alan G. Brant Every great achievement is the victory of a heart on fire. - Ralph Waldo Emerson By that measure, the life of Alan G. Brant was an exceptional victory highlighted by remarkable achievements. The many who were warmed by the fire of his heart are forever the better for having shared him in their lives. Born in Columbus, Ohio on 29, 1932, Alan Brant died peacefully at the age of 83 on , 15, 2015, at Lake Vista of Cortland in Ohio. He was, for 60 years, the loving husband of Nancy Hennis Brant of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to whom he was married on 7, 1954. He is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Cynthia Fitzgerald (Kevin) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Carol Quigley (James) of Libertyville, Illinois; his grandchildren James, Laura and Michael Fitzgerald and Colleen and Brigit Quigley; as well as his nephews Mark (Tracy) Brant and Eric (Cathy) Brant; and grand-nephews Andrew and Matthew Brant. He is predeceased by his parents Albert and Alice, his 2 brother and sister-in-law Richard and Helen Brant, and his niece Kristen Hawkins. The quest for knowledge was a driving energy that characterized the entire life of Alan Brant. A graduate of Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, he held a bachelors degree from Ohio Wesleyan University. He was honored with an Executive Award from the Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management at Dartmouth and was a graduate of the Commercial Bank Management Arden House at Columbia University; as well as the Advanced Management Program at Case Western University. His academic training was supplemented by three years as a captain and pilot in the United States Air Force. He is enshrined in the Warren City Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. Alan Brants extraordinary professional career in the world of banking and finance began in 1954 at a time when bank tellers still sat in cages and recorded 3 transactions by hand into two sets of books. By 1964 his progress was recognized by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce that named him: Outstanding Young Man of the Year. In 1971 Alan was elected Senior Vice President and Manager of the Central National Bank Retail Branch System in Cleveland, Ohio, supervising more than 600 employees and 55 branches. In 1980 he was elected Chairman, President, and CEO of Centran Bank of Akron, Ohio: a position he held for five years. In 1985, Alan Brant was elected President and CEO of Second National Bank, Warren, Ohio: a position he maintained until his retirement in 1999. With his guidance, Second Bancorp, Inc., a one-bank holding company, was established in 1987 with Alan Brant as Chairman and President until 2002. Under his leadership Second National Bank expanded from eight offices into a highly successful financial services company with 36 offices in nine counties and assets in excess of $1.54 billion. In business, Alan Brant was exceptional in many ways, but foremost among them in the fairness and diversity he displayed interacting with those with 4 whom he worked. He was perpetually open to giving others the opportunity to prove themselves and, when they did, would delight in their success. He was intelligent, curious, eager to know, and willing to share his knowledge and experience. He was equally at ease talking with CEOs as he was having coffee and donuts with everyone and anyone within the organizations he managed. The respect he earned from so many was based on his combined qualities of caring, mentoring, and inclusiveness. The cumulative accomplishments of Alan Brants career as a leader in banking and finance include these highlights: • The 2003 William G. Lyden Spirit of the Valley Award for exemplary leadership and commitment to the community, economic development, and overall progress of the Valley. • Life Emeritus Trustee of the Economic Development Foundation of the Warren-Youngstown Regional Chamber of Commerce. • Member of the Community Bank Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. • Second National Bank selected as one of the best performing banks in Ohio in 1994. • Second National Bank chosen by the Ohio Arts Council as the 1989 recipient of the Governors Award for Business Support of the Arts. • Second National Bank recipient of the nationally respected Forbes Award for Business Support of the Arts. • A lifelong patron of the Arts, Alan was recognized for personal and business support of Ohio Ballet with their Bravo Award. • Treasurer and Board Member of the Education, Civic, and Cultural Foundation of the Warren Youngstown Regional Chamber of Commerce. Alan Brant achieved significant positive results in his professional life, but the sum of his life, in addition to what he did, was about who he was. Even after retirement he spent as many as 20 hours a week devoted to issues such as education and health care. In that context he provided peerless community and civic leadership in a multitude of capacities including: • Member and former Chairman of The Hiram Garfield Society. • Trustee and Vice Chairman, Hiram Board of Trustees. Through his intense involvement many initiatives were achieved including construction of a new library, science building, and recreational center. • Trustee of the University of Akron Development Foundation. • Board member of the Finance Committee of the Ohio Foundation of Independent s. • Trustee, Youngstown State University Foundation. • Member, Kent State Trumbull Tech Prep Consortium Oversight Committee. • President of The Mahoning Valley Access Program, dedicated to increasing the number of students in Mahoning Valley who continue their educations beyond high school. • Cabinet member of United Way – Trumbull . • Member of a bipartisan committee appointed by the Ohio Supreme Court Supreme Justice to review the states judicial election system. The life of Alan Brant was hallmarked by a uniqueness of character. He manifested inner strength that comes from self confidence and a commitment to reaching goals; while at the same time being a person of proven humility and humanity. continued... |
