Obituary: Obituary Helene A. (Schuller-Strupkus) Bendel Helen was born 1, 1923, at home on the south side of Youngstown to Andreas and Anna Hartman Schuller. She lived in the Youngstown area all of her life. A graduate of South High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was born into Honterus Evangelical Lutheran Church, now merged with Bethel Lutheran Church. For many years she sang soprano and alto in the choir and was financial secretary along with various other church offices. A member of Branch 22 of the Youngstown Saxon Club (Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons) she was honored as Woman of the Year in 1998. Helen sang with the Concordia Chorus for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Youngstown Maennerchor and its chorus. Rooted in her German immigrant heritage, music was an important part of Helens life. It was one of the talents she used to express her faith, passion, and joy. Helen was proud of her attention to detail especially in her work. Before her marriage to Jerry, she was a bookkeeper for the Printz -- a mens clothing store; and Cavanaugh Hardware (mill supplies). As her children grew she served as church secretary to Honterus, and as bookkeeper for First Federal Savings and Loan. Her first husband, Gerard (Jerry) R. S. Strupkus -- who adored her (he took lessons just to dance with her), died on 20, 1957. During this tragic time – her parents, father- and sister-in-law, had also recently passed away – Helen drew on her strong spiritual faith, the support of her family and many friends, and most especially her mother-in-law Martha Borm Strupkus to build a good life for her small family. Emotionally fragile but strong in spirit, she remained firm and clear in her responsibilities to raise her children. Her leadership by example has resulted in a legacy of family and family of friends who remain close, loving, and embracing however far flung. Her beloved second husband, Erwin J. Bendel, whom she married in 1972, died on 7, 1993. Her time with him was most likely the happiest years of her adult life. Erwin also shared her love of music, her ethnic interests and background, and was a perfect fit with her family and friends. Beside her parents and husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her sister Dorthea (Martin), her dear like a sister cousin Christine Teeny (John) Pukulski. She leaves with us to cherish her life and memory her two children, Richard A. (Robin) Strupkus of Leander TX, and Elayne M.S. (Lawrence) Bozick of Coitsville OH; a loving sister Alma (Robert) Ingersoll of Poland OH; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Kevin (Heather) Strupkus: two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Benjamin Strupkus; as well as her nieces and nephews; second-cousins; and extended family of cherished friends. Services will be held at Lane Family s- Anstrom Chapel, 8387 Tod Ave. Boardman, OH. At 11:00 a.m. on . Interment will follow at Forest Lawn in Boardman. Those who wish to celebrate the life and legacy of Helen will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. |
