- - - - - - - - - Lydia Braun ~ The Early Years
Lydia Brauns four score and XX years spanned momentous changes over 2 continents, 4 countries, several languages, and breathtaking political and technological changes: Lydia began her journey in 1922 as a member of a German Mennonite community in Slavgorod, Russia; the closest larger city is Omsk. The Mennonites were invited by Catherine the Great to move from Germany and to settle in this region to help modernize Russia. In exchange they were promised the freedom to retain their religion, their language, and their own customs. Lydias father, building on the efforts of prior generations, prospered. He owned a profitable flour mill and a thriving farm employing many people. A wide variety of crops and fruit trees were grown. Lydia had recollections of her father travelling to Moscow to sell grain, and she sometimes accompanied him. As a very young child, Lydia was frightened by a dog and suffered temporary paralysis. Her nanny helped her recovery by having Lydia help with the carding of wool. Lydia talked of troika rides under warm fur robes or blankets. Each spring, a seamstress would visit the home and sew clothes for the family. Over time, the political tides shifted and resentment toward the prosperous festered. As their time in Russia was drawing to a close, Lydias father volunteered time to work with the last Tsar of Russia in relief operations for the needy. Escaping the turmoil in Russia, the family lost virtually all of their possessions and nearly their lives. The family travelled to Moscow and while there, Lydias father was imprisoned and only released when he promised to return with his family to his home within three days. On the third day, there was a miraculous opening for train passage to Germany for the group of 200 that Lydias father was leading. While waiting at a home by the train station, Lydias mother and the 4 children were helped by passengers from the station to escape from the home, when their lives were threatened. The family stayed in Germany for a time and then emigrated to Canada where Lydia spent time in the hospital due to issues from the paralysis, which impacted her eyes and led to migraine headaches. Around 1930, having survived their escape from Russia, the family began the next chapter of their lives living in a humble grain silo on the farm of Lydias uncle in the harsh environment of northern Alberta, Canada. The family eventually made their way to Winnipeg, Manitoba where Lydia attended school, sang in the church choir, took care of her younger siblings, and helped with ironing and other tasks for the boarders who rented rooms in the familys house. John Braun, also an immigrant from Russia, first proposed marriage to Lydia when she was 19 years of age. She declined, wanting to finish her RN education at Winnipeg General Hospital. John returned from overseas after 5 years in the Canadian Army, he proposed again. This time the answer was yes. Theres a happy reunion going on in heaven today.
