Obituary: Mrs. Phyllis Berry Buchanan, 90, of Valdese, went to her Heavenly on 16, 2021 at Shaire , after a period of declining health. Mrs. Buchanan was born 12, 1931 in Burke , a daughter of the late William H. Bill and Jennie Small Berry. Phyllis was known for her ability to find humor in most any circumstance. She loved her Lord and church, Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Valdese. She had a very compassionate spirit and was congenial even to strangers. In her teenage years she loved playing sports and being outdoors. In high school she was in the band, chorus, a cheerleader, played basketball and was voted most athletic her senior year. She later worked at Gareen Jewelers in Valdese where she met Ray. were married 11, 1951. In the 1970s she worked for the Valdese News as the photographer. She worked for twenty-seven years as the church secretary at MCBC. retiring as church secretary, she volunteered for many years in the gift shop at Valdese General Hospital. then in her later years, she was a regular attendee of the Senior Meal Site in Valdese. In her adult years she loved watching baseball and the Baltimore Orioles were her favorite team and Brooks Robinson was her favorite player. She continued her passion for sports by being in a weekly bowling league setting numerous individual records. She and Ray loved fishing. She would catch fish quicker than Ray could bait her hook. Her pride, joy, and happiness was found in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Buchanan; brother, Billy Ray Berry; and sister, Barbara B. Denton. Surviving is her daughter, Ann B. Carswell and husband, Danny, of Valdese; grandchildren, Kristin C. Baldwin of Anderson, SC and D.J. Carswell and wife Betsy of Rutherford , NC; great-grandchildren, Stone Baldwin, Blake Baldwin, Braleigh Carswell, Bentley Carswell, and Berkley Carswell.
