Obituary: Waynesville, Dexter J. Barnes, 90, departed this life for his heavenly home on , the Lords Day of rest, 19, 2017 at Maggie Valley & Rehabilitation. A native of Swain he was the son of the late Cicero and Lura Lequire Barnes. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by seven brothers, Kermit, r, Willard, Dillard, Gilmer, Baxter and Max Barnes; and a sister, Thelma Barnes, who died as a child before he was born; a niece; and one step great-grandson, Dillan. He and his brothers were close and cared deeply for each other. Their wives were loved by each as a sister. Dexter was a WWII Army Veteran serving the Philippines and Korea. He retired from Dayco Corporation with 35 years of service. retiring, he enjoyed repairing lawn mowers. He was instrumental in the building of two Freewill Baptist Churches in Haywood . He worked alongside his dear friend and brother in Christ, the late James Lanning, to build Holly Grove Freewill Baptist Church, named by the late Lawrence Kilby. Several years later, he was blessed to work with Lanning again to build the current church for Hyatt Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and school teacher at both churches. Dexter is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 70 years, Louise Houston Barnes; five children, Clifton Barnes (Patricia), Barbara Parks (Ken), Hoyt Barnes (Brenda), all of Waynesville, Annette Barnes, of Canton, and Jeanette Barnes, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; four grandchildren, David Barnes (Bonita), Andy Barnes (Shannon), Chris Barnes (Karen) and Shay Starnes (Jacob); two great-grandchildren, Melissa and Morgan Barnes; two sisters-in-law, Reba and Hazel Barnes; and thirteen nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 23, 2017 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells with Reverend Larry Coates, Reverend Johnny Norris and Reverend Johnny Swanger officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill with military honors. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on at the funeral home. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Haywood Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 931, Waynesville, NC 28786. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Maggie Valley & Rehabilitation who loved him also, and to his fellow residents and their families who prayed for him. |

Obituary: David Thomas Barnes, Jr May 5, 1954- 3, 2015 RALEIGH David Thomas Barnes Jr, age 60 of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away , 3, 2015. He was born May 5th, 1954 in Columbus , NC. In addition to his parents, David Thomas and Ann White Barnes of Spartanburg, SC, David is survived by his wife, Paula Gately Barnes, daughters Emily of Raleigh, NC and Christal Gordon, husband Shannon and granddaughter Lyric of Atlanta, GA; and son Jason Kuykendall of Chadbourn, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Barnes, wife Patricia of Spartanburg, SC, niece Lindsay Meyers, husband Jonathan and their daughters Ashley and Caroline of Lewisville, NC. David was an amazing person full of life, kindness and generosity of spirit. He loved his family, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the beach, his 3 dogs, music, his friends and took great pride in his work building Biogen and other local pharmaceutical plants. He livened up any space he was in with his humor, compassion and vitality; he will be deeply missed. There will be a Celebration of Davids life on May 2, 2015 at 11 am at the United Methodist Church, 506 Lake Shore Drive, Lake Waccamaw, NC in honor of his May 5th birthday. Following the service, a luncheon will be held in his honor at the home of Patricia and David Medlin, 860 Bella Colla, Lake Waccamaw, NC, hosted by the Medlin and Mitchell Barnes family. Lake Waccamaw was always a special place for David as it served as a favorite family gathering spot for the extended Barnes family. Condolences may be made online at www.dignitymemorial.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Davids name to the American Liver Foundation or a charity of your choice. |
