Obituary: Dorothea Elizabeth Speakman Baker, 88, of Hickory passed away at her residence on 31, 2016. Born 13, 1927 in Philadelphia , PA, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Alan Speakman and Marie a Dorothea Ravior Speakman. A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Dorothea was a member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church and retired as secretary of the Ocean City NJ Board of Education. She enjoyed music, singing, and dancing. graduating high school in 1945, Dorothea was trained at the University of Pennsylvania to work as a computational analyst for the Army Ballistics Research Division in Philadelphia. She also held responsibilities as a computer technician on the first digital computer called ENIAC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, G. Alan Speakman; a sister, Ruth M. Speakman and 2 great grandchildren, Benjamin and Alexander Forbes. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 68 years, Charles S. Baker, III; daughter, Janet B. Hassing and husband Finn of Hickory; sons, William W. Bill Baker and wife Patsie of Lexington, NC and Alan C. Baker and wife Barbara of Alamogordo, NM; grandchildren, Kristin Rhyne and fiancé, Tony Fernetti, Katherine Bryan and husband Kwame, Kevin Baker and wife Jenn, Jen DeLong and husband Joshua, Kristi Forbes and husband Robert, Emilie Biddle and husband Compton, C. Lucas Hassing and Peter Hassing; great grandchildren, Max and Ava Rhyne, Kellan and Kohen Bryan, Naomi, Miriam, Lillian and Rebekah DeLong, Isaiah and Lenna Moon, and Compton, Finley and Charlotte Biddle; and sister-in-law, Janice Speakman of New Oxford, PA. Obituary: Clyde, David L. Baker, 62, passed away on , 3, 2015 at Memorial Campus/St. Joseph Hospital. A native of Caldwell , he was the son of Gwendolyn Holder Jenkins and the late Clyde Elmo Baker and was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Baker. David spent four years serving in the US Air Force before joining the North Carolina National Guard in 1980. He proudly served in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, retiring as 1st Sergeant of the 211th Military Police . David was employed at Champion International for 38 years and was a 45-year member of Antioch Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon and in many other capacities. He taught so many friends and family the true meaning of love and was a man of integrity, selflessness and compassion. His love for others had no boundaries, and he will be forever remembered as an exemplary servant of the Lord and will be greatly missed by family and friends. In addition to his mother, David is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane Fullbright Baker; his daughters, Krista King and husband, Nicholas, of Hickory and Amy Garner and husband, Ben, of Waynesville; three sisters, Jean Punch, of Savannah, Georgia and Stephanie Lynn and Nicole Womack, both of Hickory; one brother, Bobby Baker and his wife, Linda, of Bessemer City; four grandchildren, Madeline and Lydia King and Josie and Jeb Garner; mother-in-law, Gertrude Fullbright; one brother-in-law, John Fullbright; and one special sister-in-law, Phoebe Burleson and husband, Bruce; as well as many special friends. services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on at Antioch Baptist Church with Reverend Gary Hearon, Reverend Nicholas King, and Reverend Steve Taylor officiating. Ben Garner will present the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until time of service. Obituary: Maggie Valley-David R. Baker, 91, of Maggie Valley passed away on 15, 2015. David was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 19, 1923, to the late David and Olive Mudditt Baker. He was Past Commander of the Legion of Honor, Morocco Temple in Jacksonville, FL and served his country in the Army during World War II. David retired from the civil service where he was a supervisor with the building inspection department of the US Navy. He was also a member of First Baptist, Maggie Valley where he sang in the choir and was active in the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. David is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lucille Baker; three daughters, Julie Wrenn, Patricia Highsmith, and Leigh Ann Baker; son, Wayne Baker (Ellen); a sister, Audrey Laredo; a brother, Derrek Baker; and one granddaughter. A memorial service celebrating David’s life will be held at 2:30 PM on , 28, at First Baptist Maggie Valley with the Reverend Ricky Mason and the Reverend Erma Bond officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
