Obituary: Hattie Bird, a long-time Georgetown resident, went peacefully into the arms of her Lord on , Jan. 20 at the age of 85. Born in St. Louis, Mo., she came to California with her parents and brother at the age of four and grew up in Lomita Park (which has since been incorporated by San Bruno). She met her future husband of 65 years while attending Lomita Park Grammar School. Hattie graduated from San Mateo High and in 1951 married Stan Bird just before he was sent to Korea. moved to Woodside in the early 60s and by 1966 had bought property and built a home in Georgetown where they enjoyed weekend visits and summer vacations before permanently moving to the Divide. Stan and Hattie were founding members of Trinity Lutheran Church on the Divide and she was part of a womens support group that ran food and drinks to the Georgetown firefighters while they were on emergency incidents. Hattie also opened The Bird Cage gift shop inside of Maxines Variety Store, thus starting the gift shop trend in Georgetown. Besides being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she loved to entertain, always-planning family gatherings, and holidays were always special occasions. Stan and Hattie also hosted several of their grammar school reunions at their home in Georgetown. Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Hilda Abraham; her brother, Roland Jr.; her son, Stan Jr.; and grandson, Tucker Reite. She is survived by her loving husband, Stan; daughters, Kris Presba (Ken) and Lori Reite (Jim) all of Georgetown. She also leaves seven grandchildren - Michael Stigen (Victoria), Bobby Stigen, Connor Bird, and Joey Reite all of Georgetown; Connie Stroh (Robert) of Maryland, Josh Bird (Amy) of Foster City, Dalton Bird of Roseville and nine great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Stan Abraham of Aptos; sister, Nancy Castens of Minnesota; and sister-in-law Lillian George of Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church in memory of Hattie for a stained-glass window being made and dedicated to her. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on , Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Georgia Slide . |
