Obituary: Mary Leota (Wilkison) Birchfield, 78, of Vista, California passed away at approximately 3:55 PM on , 25, 2015 at Tri-City Medical in Oceanside, California. She was the youngest of 3 children born to Cyrus Eugene Gene Wilkison originally of Las Vegas, New Mexico and Elizabeth Beth (Burhans) Wilkison originally of San Francisco, California. Mary was born at 11:10 AM on , 14, 1937 at home, 3327 Marlborough Avenue, San Diego, California. As a child, she and her lifelong best friend Jean loved roller skating, going to the beach, and riding their bicycles to church on . At some time during Marys early school years, she fell into the waters of Lake Murray and was rescued by her older brother Burt, who later received a commendation for saving her. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1954 and took business/bookkeeping classes at a local community college. Then Mary worked for 11 years as a secretary and bookkeeper before marrying Jerry W. Birchfield on 18, 1963 at Lakeside Baptist Church in Lakeside, California. In 1964, Mary and Jerry moved to Huntsville, Alabama where Jerry worked in a blockhouse for a NASA contractor who tested the large rockets used for space exploration and moon flights. In 1967, Mary, Jerry, and their 2 children, Becky and David, moved to San Jose, California, where Jerry worked for a NASA contractor at Moffett Field testing components for satellites under extreme space conditions. In 1968, the family moved to San Diego and then Escondido, California, where Jerry worked for Singer-Kearfott for 10 plus years in the environmental test laboratory. Jerry then worked in the automotive security industry for approximately 24 years as an engineer in north San Diego , California. During these years, Mary kept busy caring for home and children, and was employed for some time assembling printed circuit boards for automotive security systems. Mary was a devoted wife and loving mother. She kept an inviting and comfortable home, and the family and sometimes friends looked forward to her home cooked meals and seasonal decorations on every holiday. She preferred to have family gather around the table to play cards or watch a movie (she was a treasure trove of Hollywood details) rather than go out on birthdays and anniversaries. Mary loved puttering with her succulents and flowers, doing word search puzzles, riding shotgun to the back country, listening to country western music, shopping for antiques and dime store treasures, and playing slots. She always had a tender place in her heart for animals and she never met a stranger. Mary especially loved traveling to National and State Parks for the spectacular wildlife and scenery which included the spring babies and the fall Elk Rutts (deer, buffalo calves, and elk were her favorites). Outings often ended with a stop at her favorite Viejas or Gold Strike Casinos. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her father Gene in 1945, and her mother Beth in 1969; and her brothers Burt Eugene Wilkison in 2002 and Harry Donald Wilkison in 2011. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jerry W Birchfield of Vista, California; daughter, Becky Rae Wergers, and son, David Wayne Birchfield and daughter-in-law, Sherry Lynn Lanious-Ward, all of Escondido, California. Also, 8 granddaughters; Erica Lea Wergers, Emily Elizabeth Wergers-Dommer, Abigail Marie Wergers, Lauren Ashley Boyett-Stone, Megan Marie Boyett, Desirae Amber Ridge, Allison Nicole Birchfield, Renee Caitlin Birchfield, and one great granddaughter, Iris Bair; all of California except Lauren who lives in Yuma, Arizona.
