Obituary: Lewis Theodore "Ted" Batt Jr., 87, of Swanzey died Jan. 11, 2015, at his residence after a period of failing health.

He was born in Orange, N.J., Jan. 31, 1927, son of Lewis T. and Ethel (Green) Batt Sr. He graduated from high school in New Jersey and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy for a brief time. Then he attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in engineering.

His first job was with American Bridge U.S. Steel Corp. in Trenton, N.J., for five years. He then moved to New Hampshire and began working as the first employee of the newly formed Baybutt Construction. He began his career there estimating and also keeping the books. He retired from there in 2001 as the chief estimator.

For many years, Mr. Batt served as the building inspector for the town of Swanzey. He also helped with the start-up of the Swanzey Campground including cutting down trees and helping build various buildings. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Keene for many years.

Mr. Batt enjoyed woodworking and construction. He was also an accomplished gardener. He was fond of listening to the older style of country-western music. Every year, he would take a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to hear various country-western singers.

He was a humble man and a hard worker.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Batt of Swanzey; his children, Madison Batt of Seattle, Jennifer Batt of Lancaster, Stephen Batt of Forrest, Va., Deborah Rosselli of Whitinsville, Mass., Nancy Batt of Brighton, Mass., and Theodore Batt 3rd of Lynchburg, Va.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, David Batt of Princeton, N.J.; and a sister, Judy Myers of Fitzwilliam. His two brothers, Russell Batt and Richard Batt, died earlier.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Maple Avenue, in Keene. Burial will be held in the spring. Fletcher and Cremation Services of Keene is in charge of arrangements. A visitation hour will be held before the service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Batt's name may be made to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey 03446 or care, Hospice and Community Services, 312 Marlboro St., Keene 03431.

Obituary: Francis Batista, 76, of Merrimack, died 25, 2008 at Green Brier care in Nashua following a period of declining health. Francis was born on May 7, 1931, and was the son of Antonio and Adelia (Barros) Batista. He lived in Manchester most of his life. From 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1955 he served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mr. Batista worked as a driver for both the A-1 Asphalt Co., and the Manchester Mental . He enjoyed taking walks, working outside his house, and watching golf. He was especially fond of fishing, and will be remembered as an avid Red Sox fan. Family members include his wife, Pauline (Rochette) Batista of Merrimack; three daughters, Cheryl Ann Petas, Karen Jean Verville, and Debra Larose; two sons, Scott Batista and Wayne Batista; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren ; one sister, Mary Dionne; two brothers, John Batista and Philip Batista; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Obituary: Ruth L. Bates (Knapp) on 14th at the Green Brier in Nashua, NH at the age of 95. Mrs. Bates has lived in Nashua, NH for 16 years after living in Plymouth for 60 years where she retired from the Plymouth School system where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of the Church of the Pilgrimage, a former member of the Eastern Stars and the Rebeccas. She was the beloved wife of the late Eldred E. Bates and is survived by her son Melvyn E. Bates and his wife Lillian of Nashua, NH and her daughter Eleanor Garner and her husband Pat of Sheffield, TX. She also leaves her brother Richard Knapp of Billerica, her sister Harriet Haley of WV, her 4 grandchildren: Karen Wilson, Elaine Bates, Stacy Shattuck and Randy Garner and her 6 great grandchildren: Jacob, Hannah, Abbye, Brandon, Brandon, Tyler and Lauren. Obituary: Lieutenant Colonel Eric Travis Bates, US Army, Ret., 66, of Peterborough, formerly of Harrisville, died , May 30, 2016, in Salem, VA, of a sudden illness.

He was born, on 5, 1950, at Elliot Community Hospital, in Keene, to Frank Merrill and Virginia (Travis) Bates Jr., and was a long time resident of Harrisville. Eric attended Keene schools graduating from Keene High School in 1968 and Keene State in 1977. He was a member of the Keene High School Wrestling Team in 1967 and 1968. He also played baseball for Keene High.

He was employed by several local businesses including Keene State , stead Woolen Mills, and Troy Mills.

He served for over 30 years in the US Army working his way up the ranks from Private to Lieutenant Colonel. Lt. Colonel Bates Army assignments included: service as a squad leader and platoon sergeant with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam during the period of 1968 through 1970; company commander with the 203d Military Intelligence Battalion located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland from 1987 to 1989; Chemical Battle Staff Officer with the 24th Infantry Division, with locations at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, from 1990 to 1993; Operations Officer with the Army Reserve in Little Rock, Arkansas, Fort Jackson South Carolina, and Fort Devens, Massachusetts from 1994 through 2006. His Military awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and two foreign campaign medals with eight battle stars. He was recognized with awards from five different US Presidents. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 799 in Keene.

retirement, he worked on staff at the Student Conservation Association in Charlestown, New Hampshire and as a Junior ROTC instructor at Bertie High School in Windsor, North Carolina.

Eric is survived by his three children: Katie B. Bates and her husband Darrell F. Gyles of Deering, Tara L. Crosby of Mason and Matthew T. Bates and his wife Tiffany M. Bates of New Ipswich; as well as five grand-children: Trinity D. Pomerleau; Rosalie M. Crosby; Odin T. Bates; Violet D. Gyles; and Levi D. Crosby.

Eric was loved immensely by his children, grandchildren, and friends. His absence is heartbreaking and he will be missed dearly. Family was his highest priority and he adored his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them as often as possible.

There will be a memorial service, with Military Honors, on , 17, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Fletcher . An hour of visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 until 11:00. Interment will occur at a later date in Arlington National in Arlington, VA.
