Obituary: When William T. Beck (Bill or Billy) walked into the room, people felt at ease and comfortable. He was a clever and gregarious person who always sought out the finest attributes in other people. He loved to laugh, make other people laugh, and was generally a selfless person -- placing the needs of others before his own. William was born on 29, 1943 at Abington Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Wilmer T. (William) & Dorothy Beck. William was raised in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. Always at the ready with a good joke, he grew up to be quite a humorous person and never took himself or anything too seriously. William was raised with four siblings. The oldest of five, he had two sisters, Barbara and Betsy, and two brothers, Michael and Danny. William was very accepting and supportive of his family. He was perceived as the central person in his family in terms of keeping communication open between the family members. As a teenager, when Bill and his siblings were faced with the daunting reality of life without their mother and a father at war, he became the family's rock which created the foundation of his future character. Whenever discord or tension arose within the home, William was typically the member who brought about resolution and harmony. These traits served William well in his adult life and, along with his wit, outgoing personality, and understanding of others, drew the admiration of many who knew him. As a young boy, William was able to empathize and identify with a vast array of people and personality types. This quality drew him into a diverse group of friends and acquaintances. William was intelligent and had little trouble getting along with his peers. William took part in Little League baseball, when he was once knocked out by a line drive that all the siblings tried to hide from their parents. He was a Boy Scout, and once participated in a Jamboree in "far away" Phoenix, Arizona. He also visited Pike's Peak in Colorado, and recently confessed to losing his mother's camera during the same trip. In his spare time he liked playing sports, baseball cards, and anything constructive to make a nickel. At the family owned car dealership, the mechanics once built him a wooden race car with a motor which was by far the finest go cart in creation. William's memorable achievements included his good grades and his ability to play music by ear on the piano. William had the ability to find amusement with almost any activity he and the many childhood friends he shared might discover. During his high school years, William responded enthusiastically to any new project and was regularly in search of one adventure after another. He graduated from Chief Logan High School in 1961. He was a an excellent student, and generally did well in his courses. William absorbed as much as he could from all of his teachers and was consistently able to tackle conceptual and abstract problems, using his imagination to master his assignments. For William, school often became just an extension of playtime, thanks to his ability to turn just about anything into a game. Classmates considered William a good listener, knowing that when necessary, they could go to him to discuss just about anything. His favorite class in high school was english. The teacher he enjoyed learning from the most was Mrs. Steele, who considered him one of her prized students. In addition to good grades, Bill was President of Student Council his senior year, was on the varsity wrestling squad, played the lead in several school plays, and was a manager of the football team which went undefeated with many players earning scholarships and some going on to play in the NFL. He was also an avid swimmer, winning medals from meets at the YMCA. He also loved to dance, and taught his sisters Barbara and Betsy how to cut a rug. William did well in college, as a result of his love of learning and desire to succeed -- but he still found time to spend with his family and friends (and more than a few girlfriends along the way). He earned his Bachelor degree in business administration from Penn State University in the 1960's. His favorite courses were anything related to business. Bill loved his life in college: he was the best dancer, best partier, and best dressed at PSU. As social director for his fraternity Phi Kappa Tau, he once got The Kingsmen to come play "Louie Louie" and other hits at a frat party. More than all of these things, he loved his siblings -- always taking time to go home and play football with Danny and his friends, encourage Michael in wrestling, give Barbara a hard time for no reason, and scare kids from the neighborhood on Halloween together Betsy in their creepy basement. Bill was very adaptable, a quality that helped him make the transition from high school to college with little difficulty. As a result, William's problem solving skills and thirst for new knowledge almost guaranteed that he enjoyed virtually every class he took. With a talent for making acquaintances easily which in turn brought him an endless stream of friends, William was very sociable and could blend without effort into any social group. Assertive and outgoing, William was easy to know and demonstrated a deep concern for others and an empathetic grace. He always seemed aware of what was going on with people around him and throughout his life he made many, many friends. While growing up, some of his best friends were Johnny Magill, Billy Rodkey, John Wertz, Joe Hambright, Ned Strauser, Mike Erb, and Joe Sikorsky.
