Lester J. Brown was born on a farm two and one-half miles southeast of Osborn, Missouri, 20, 1915, to William Ralph Brown and Helen McQuate Brown. He married Frances Marie Brizendine of Kansas City, Missouri on 29, 1945. A son, Richard, was born to them on 11, 1946.

Lester grew up on a farm 5 1/2 miles east and one-half mile south of Cameron. As a boy he assisted on the family farm. His father, Ralph, operated a huckster route out of Kerr, Missouri for several years and butchered hogs and cattle for farmers during the 1920's and 1930's. He helped his father whenever possible and in the 1940's and 1950's his father had a poultry and egg route, buying from dealers. During his layoffs and vacations, Lester helped on those routes.

Lester and his father bought a grocery store in Turney, Missouri, which was later sold and another store was purchased in Mirable, Missouri; and in 1936 this store was sold when the family farm was sold and the family moved five miles west of Cameron. Lester entered the Railway Mail Service on 40, 1940, subbing on various lines until he was drafted and entered the U.S.. Army on 4, 1941.

He entered the Army as a draftee in Ft. Leavenworth for a year's service. He was sent to Ft. Knox, Kentucky for training and there was assigned to Service Battery, 27th Armored Field Artillery, 1st Armored Division. During the summer of 1941 the 1st Armored took part in the maneuvers of 1941 in Louisiana and Texas, then convoyed to Rock Hill, SC and Fort Bragg NC for more maneuvers before returning to Fort Knox on 7, 1941. Because of the declaration of war, all leaves were canceled and preparations were made for going overseas, but Lester obtained two three-day passes before leaving Ft. Knox to visit his parents and girl friend, Frances Brizendine, whom he married after the war.

The 1st Armored Division was sent to Northern Ireland, going overseas on the Queen Mary, this being the first troops that she carried between the United States and the British Isles. The Division was stationed in Northern Ireland for three months and the 27th Field Artillery was stationed in Kielkeel, Down. At this time plans were being made for invasion of both Europe and Northern Africa. The 27th was to become a part of the invasion force that landed on the North African shores on 7, 1942 at St. Leu east of Oran, Algeria. the surrender of the French forces, the 27th was ordered to the Tunisian battle front where it took part in the campaign until the surrender of the German forces there.

the completion of that campaign the 27th and the rest of the Division were ordered back to the Rabat-Casablanca area of Morocco for training and rehabilitation. While there the Army was making plans for the invasion of Italy and the 27th FA became a part of that invasion force landing on the Italian seacoast at Paestum, Italy on 9, 1944. The 27th was attached to various units until the arrival of the rest of the Division later that fall. The Division advanced to the Cassino, Italy area until the middle of 1944, when they were pulled back and sent to the Anzio, Italy beachhead. Lester arrived 30, 1944 and left there on 3, 1944. He stayed with the 27th AFA until the battalion was north of Florence, Italy, where he returned home on 45 days Temporary duty. He was to be returned to the Italian Campaign but the war being over, he was discharged 16, 1945, because of a point system in effect at the time.

His discharge papers show that he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart on 22, 1944, and 5 Bronze Stars for the following campaigns: Rome Arno, Algerian French Morocco; Naples Foggia, and Tunisian.

Upon arrival at the United States he and Frances Brizendine were married on 29, 1945. being discharged from the Army, they moved to an apartment on North Lawn Avenue in Kansas City and he returned to work for the Railway Mail Service of the U.S.. Postal Office, having been assigned to the Air Mail Field in Kansas City while he was in the Army in North Africa. About this time the Post Office Department decided to reduce the Airmail Field from level 5 to level 4 and there being a vacancy on the KC & Memphis RPO, Lester transferred to that line. He worked for many years on the night train going to Memphis, Tennessee. He worked on the day train until the line was discontinued, at which time he transferred to the KC & Albuquerque RPO and stayed there until its discontinuance, and was assigned to the Council Bluffs & KC, acting as foreman on the last R.P.O. to head out of Kansas City; one train left about two minutes before the CB & KC left on 12, 1968. The Chicago & KC RPO continued to run into Kansas City but their headout was Chicago, not Kansas City. In order to continue in the Mail Service, Lester was reassigned to the Post Office in Ames, Iowa where he continued in the Mail Service until his retirement in 1970.

While in the Mail Service, he became interested in the Railway Mail Association and began to work for the betterment of Railway Mail employees. He had joined the Kansas City Branch many continued...
