Obituary: Surrounded by her family, Mary Lu Berger made the journey to join our Lord on 17, 2012. The daughter of Clifford Rhea and Grace Chew, was born in Kansas City, Mo., on 9, 1927. As a young girl, she attended Bryant Elementary and St. Theresas Academy. Mary Lu graduated from Southwest High School in 1945. She graduated from Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. While attending Marymount she studied architectural design. In 1952, Mary Lu married Peter W. Berger, her loving husband of over 51 years. Peter often described her as being the most beautiful, loving woman that he had ever met. Together they raised four children, Harry (Hal) Calvin Berger II (Maureen), Melissa Ann Neighbors (Michael), Laura Michele Mackey (Hank) and Mark Douglas (Laura). Mary Lu truly loved being a wife and mother. In 1961, when Peter moved his dental practice and family to Belton, she finally got to build the dream home that she designed while attending Marymount. It was in this home that Mary Lu stressed family values and togetherness to her four children. Entertaining her childrens many friends always brought happiness to Mary Lu. She involved herself at her childrens school in many ways, acting as room mother and serving on the schools PTA. She also was a Red Cross volunteer at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base. From 1977-1981, Mary Lu served on the Missouri Council of Aging Board, helping enact important legislation for Missouris senior citizens. Mary Lus adventurous spirit and her curiosity of other cultures led to a lifetime of traveling with her husband and her family. Mary Lu enjoyed a variety of experiences. Her travels took her all over the U.S., Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean. Wherever her travels led her she would embrace the local culture and history. She enjoyed sharing her experiences with family and friends. Whether it was spontaneous trips to New Orleans with Peter, well planned family vacations to South Padre Island or Hawaii, Mary Lu always welcomed the opportunity to enrich old friendships and make new ones. She was kind and devoted to all that she met. Her sense of humor and her love of laughter will be missed by all. Her passing leaves a deep void for all that were fortunate enough to have spent time with Mary Lu. She is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Sally Ann, a grandson, Peter Matthew Mackey and her husband, Peter. Besides her four children, Mary Lu leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren all of whom she adored. The family would like to thank all of the health care providers at The Rehabilitation of Raymore and Southern Hospice. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. , Jan. 21, at Belton . Obituary: Katharine Kae Harris Berger, 96 years old, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully on , 24 2016, at North Kansas Hospital with family at her side. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on , 23 , at North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO. A service of committal and entombment will take place 10:00 AM on , 27 at the Fairview in Albemarle, North Carolina. Born as Mildred Catherine Harris in Anson , North Carolina, on 9 1920, Kae lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, the first 13 years. When her family returned to North Carolina to establish a farm outside Wingate during the Great Depression, she entered and later graduated as class valedictorian from Wingate High School in 1937. She then enrolled at Womans , University of North Carolina, in Greensboro, graduating in 1941 with a bachelors in business administration. That same year, she accepted a position as a government stenographer in the U.S. Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC, attaining several promotions that would lead to the position of secretary to the admirals office. There she handled sensitive and high-level personnel matters during World War II. In 1944, she met Walter Robert Bob Berger, Jr., an Army pilot flying B-25s in the South Pacific. had been childhood playmates at her grandfathers farm near Oakboro, North Carolina. In , they married in Hyattsville, Maryland, outside Washington, DC. the war, they were stationed nearly 3 years in Germany, where Bob flew 244 missions for the Berlin Airlift. Their first son, Paul Edward, was born in 1947 in Berlin. Their second son, Neil Harris, was born in 1952 in Dayton, Ohio. While Bob served in the Air Force, the family moved to California, the Philippines, and finally Washington state. Bob retired as a major from the Air Force in 1959 and accepted a position in Kansas City with the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1986. Kae was employed at Farmland Industries as an executive secretary, retiring in 1986 after 23 years of service. Kae was always active in volunteer organizations including the Red Cross as a Gray Lady while an officers wife, the Retired Officers Association in Kansas City, and the Northland Shepherds in Kansas City. She was also a member of North Cross United Methodist Church, the American Association of University Women, the American Business Womens Association, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and North America. She enjoyed genealogy research, as well as many hobbies that included ceramics, china painting, crocheting, embroidery, painting, and writing. She was a self-taught pianist and passed on to her sons a love of classical and popular music. Kae was a strong, independent, spirited, and charming woman. her husband passed away in 1994, she continued to maintain the family home alone until the last two years of her life when she became a resident at New Mark in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her father Benjamin Franklin Harris (1892 to 1966), her mother Carrie Alma Edwards (1899 to 1985), her husband Walter Robert Berger, Jr. (1919 to 1994). She is survived by son Paul Edward Berger of Seattle, step-granddaughter Sherolyn Love, grandson Nathan Edward and his son Jacob Silas; and by son Neil Harris Berger of Washington, DC.
