Obituary: INEZ COUCH BOWIE, 92, passed away , 24, 2012 at Olive Grove Terrace in Olive Branch, MS. Inez graduated from high school at Eudora, Mississippi and with her sister attended nursing school at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Following graduation, she was employed at the Marine Hospital in Memphis. Later she joined the Navy to serve as a nurse. At her first permanent duty station, Bethesda Naval Hospital, she served as a private duty nurse for Secretary of State Cordell Hull. Later she transferred to the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejune, where she met her future husband, Everette Bowie. the birth of her children, she worked at Shelby Department for twenty-two years until her retirement in 1981. She was predeceased by her parents, William Franklin (Dean) Couch and Nona McBrayer as well as her sister, Evelyn Louise Couch. She is survived by her husband, Everette Wayne Bowie; their two children, Janis Lynn Bowie Risley (Ron) of Memphis and Cheryl Evelyn Bowie Cavins of Olive Branch, MS, and their two grandchildren, Jason Cole Risley of Cordova and Jennifer Ann Risley Cahoon (Billy) of Richmond, VA. Visitation will be , 26 from 5:30-8 p.m., and funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., , 27, all at Memphis and Memorial Gardens, 5599 Poplar Ave. Rev. Bill Beavers will be officiating. Obituary: Mrs. Alma Thomas Bowers, born May 1, 1918 to Walter T. Thomas and Florence Dozier Thomas in Neshoba , MS. Alma was the youngest of 4 sisters with 3 brothers that lived to adulthood. Alma began playing basketball at Madden High School, and playing ball became a lifetime love for her. When she worked at the General Electric Plant in Jackson, she played on a women’s basketball team for years. Immediately prior to WWII, Alma Thomas married Marcus Bowers. He was called into the army and served in Europe. Alma waited for his return to Jackson, MS, which became their residence until after Marcus’ death. She moved to the Cascades in Clinton and later to TracePointe (now Brookdale). Alma has been a longtime active member of Parkway Baptist Church of Jackson, and later of Clinton, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents, as well as brothers, William Thomas, and Oren Thomas, sisters, Celestia Thomas, Eolia Thomas Boothe, and Mary Etta Thomas Williams. She is survived by one brother, Julian Thomas of Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews. services will be held , Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. in Lakewood Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held , Dec. 29 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again from 9 a.m. until the service. Interment will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. |
