Obituary: Douglas Dewayne Backlund was born 1, 1936 in Holmes City Township, MN, the son of Swan and Clara (Olson) Backlund. Doug grew up in the Holmes City area where he attended school. He graduated from high school in Alexandria, MN in 1954. Dougs interest in mechanics landed him a job with Ernie Unruh where he worked as a mechanic until entering the United States Army in of 1956. His mechanic training led him to a job with MNDoT where he worked until retiring in 1997. Doug was united in marriage to Lois Roiland in 1961 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Doug was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brandon and a member of the Brandon American Legion Post 278. Following his retirement Doug and Lois moved to a home they built near Millerville, MN. Doug was a solid fan of Minnesota sports. Traveling was something Doug and Lois enjoyed. Doug was very proud of his daughters and their husbands, and his grandchildren. On , 2, 2017 Doug died at the age of eighty years. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great grandson, Leo Surratt; brothers, Kermit and Gordon Backlund; and sisters, Eunice Backlund, Ruth Spilseth and Doris Junkermeier. Doug is survived by his wife, Lois Backlund of Brandon; daughters, Loretta Mangano and husband, Mike, of Lakeville, MN, Sara Fischer and husband, Steve, of New Brighton, MN and Mary Dyrhaug and husband, Jeff, of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Nick Mangano and wife, Emma, Jackie Horstman and husband, Ryan, Andrew Fischer and fiancé, Kate, Alison Surratt and husband, Ben, Erik Fischer, Andrea Dyrhaug, Stephanie Dyrhaug, Alex Dyrhaug and Jackson Dyrhaug; great grandchildren, Phillip and Campbell Surratt; and sisters, Shirley Peterson and Marlys Morland. A funeral service will be held 1 PM , 9, 2017 at Grace Lutheran Church in Brandon. Reverend Dennis Preston will officiate. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill at Holmes City. Military honors will be accorded by the Brandon American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM at Grace Lutheran Church and also one hour prior to the service at church. |
