Obituary: Garald A. Barton Jr. "Bud," born 13, 1923 in Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on 28, 2014, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 90. Garald was raised in Battle Creek, graduating from Battle Creek Central High School in 1941. graduation, he went to work for the Michigan Bell Telephone . In 1943, Garald joined the U.S. Navy. His initial duty stations were the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois for basic training; then New London, Connecticut for submarine training; and finally, Iowa State for electrical training. He then went to Pearl Harbor, where he was stationed aboard the submarine USS Sunfish as Fireman 1st class. During those years, the Sunfish went on many missions in the South Pacific. He said several times that he served under two Captains, both with the knowledge and skill to keep the Japanese from sinking her. Garald, and his shipmates, received the Navy Unit Commendation ribbon for outstanding heroism in action for the periods 23 to 19 1944, and 31 to 28 1945. his discharge in 1946, Gerald returned to Battle Creek and went back to work for "Ma Ben" as a lineman, until his retirement in 1979. There, he met and courted Janice Geleff, and they wed on 6, 1954. It was a second marriage for both, but it was meant to last. Sadly, Janice passed away on 24, 2011. In his younger years, Bud was very active with friends and family, bowling, playing cards, and fishing, as well as attending all of the kids' activities and sports events. In Summer 1962, he and Janice took the entire family on a cross-country camping trip to see several national parks; plus visit relatives in Seattle and attend the Seattle World's Fair. In his retirement years, he helped Janice with volunteer work at the old Community Hospital, and then at Leila Hospital (which later became Battle Creek Systems and then Bronson Battle Creek). Garald was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; parents, Garald A. Barton Sr. and Isabelle J. Barton (Walters); sisters, M. Joyce Barton (MacCreery) and Patricia A. Barton (Pierce); and son, Alan M. Geleff. He is survived by three children, Diana Geleff Meinberg (John) of Birmingham, Alabama; Douglas A. Barton of Battle Creek; and Garald (Gary) A. Barton III (Cindy) of Antioch, Illinois; plus 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. There will be a short visitation and memorial service at Farley-Estes & Dowdle in Battle Creek at 12 noon on , 5, 2014. Obituary: Ethel M. Barton nee Dexter of Midland formally of Lansing. Age 78, passed away on 8th, 2016. She was born to Harold and Beatrice Dexter on 3rd, 1938. She is preceded in death by her parents. Surviving to cherish her memory is her son; Matthew (Heather) Dexter, Sisters; Esther (Dale) Volz - Minden City, MI and Jean (Ken Ganther) Dexter - Olathe, KS, and many nieces and nephews. Ethel retired from the State of Michigan after many years of employment. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, fill-in puzzles, and needle work. She was dedicated member of Community of Christ for all her life. Service will be held 11am on 13, 2016 at Gorsline Runciman s, 900 East Michigan Ave, Lansing, Michigan. Officiated by Elder Mary Jane Miller. Visitation will be held from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm on 12, 2016 and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
