Obituary: Born on 18, 1932 in Groningen, The Netherlands, Frederik Bakker-Arkema passed away on 25, 2017 at age of 84. Fred grew-up on a farm on the North Sea during the Depression and World War II. These events, the loss of his mother, and the loving and enduring support of his father, had a lasting impact on his life and shaped many of his values and beliefs. Following the War, he moved to Wageningen where he lived as a teenager. In 1951 he attended Bluffton in Ohio as a foreign exchange student. He spent a year at Bluffton before transferring to Michigan State University completing his undergraduate degree in 1959. He later earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering at MSU in 1964. He married the love of his life, Paula de Mol in Gouda, The Netherlands in 1957, his wife of 59 years. He spent his entire professional career at MSU reaching full professor in 1971 until his retirement in 2000. He continued to teach at MSU for several years following his retirement because of his love for teaching. He published numerous technical publications in the area of post harvest technology, including the US standard textbook on grain-drying; he engineered the concurrent-flow grain-drying technology, now commercialized on three continents; he was the developer of the MSU grain-drying simulation models, now used worldwide; and he was a fellow at CIGR (International Society of Agricultural Engineers). He was a leader and innovator in his field, but his most proud professional achievement was educating MSU students, including mentoring and working with over thirty doctoral students. His family, students and friends were his passion. He traveled the world visiting with many of his students in their native countries. He cherished trips to Ile Paradis in Canada with his friends and sons (he was a top notch dishwasher and renown for his expert work with the fish net) and to Fountain Point in Lake Leelanau, Michigan (where he loved biking and pontooning) with his children and grandchildren. He immersed himself in his childrens and grandchildrens lives where he was affectionately known as "Opa." He worked to develop a special relationship with each of them, taking an interest in whatever they did and more pride in their accomplishments than any of his own. He had a life-long love of animals and music. He may have been from The Netherlands, but he was a Spartan to his core attending more MSU sporting events than can be counted. He is survived by his beloved wife Paula; his son Peter (Lauren), St. Louis, MO, and their four daughters Haley, Hannah (Thatcher), Julia and Lilly; a daughter Irma (Terry), Okemos, MI, and their three children, Alex, Emma and Alli; and a son Erik (Becky), Ann Arbor, MI, and their three children, Peter, Gretchen and Jack. He also leaves a sister Henriette, a brother Martin (Mariette) and many nieces and nephews living in The Netherlands. A Memorial Service will be held at the MSU Alumni Memorial Chapel at 2:30 PM , 30, 2017. The Memorial will be preceded by a visitation at 1:00 PM at the MSU Alumni Memorial Chapel and followed by a reception in the Red Cedar Room at the Kellogg on the MSU campus at 4:00 PM.
