Obituary: Robert W. Bob Beard, husband of Marilyn J. (Bruni) Beard, passed peacefully on 30, 2015. A depression kid born in 1929 in Gloucester, Bob was the son and only child of Joseph H. and Velma (Pike) Beard. At a young age, when 9 out of 10 families were on the brink of poverty and breadwinners out of work, Bob sold Evening Post magazines and others to help the family. He sold eighty Record American newspapers on the streets of Brookline Village where he lived for nine years, shined shoes, delivered ice & coal for Brookline Ice & Coal and was a busboy & dishwasher in Brookline Village restaurants. He also was an extractor boy in three commercial laundries in Brookline Village. During World War II, with permission from his parents, Bob left high school in 1945 and entered the US Maritime Service for training, serving under Gloucesters own Admiral McNulty at Sheeps Head Bay in Brooklyn NY. As the war drew to a close, volunteers were needed for mopping up details at the Japanese holdouts on Palau Island and Bob joined the US Marine Corps where he served his entire enlistment in Honolulu and the Hawaiian Islands as a truck driver and warehouseman in Supply. He was also a member of the Fleet Marines, those men who are ready in full battle gear in six hours and also served in rollup detachment of various islands in Hawaii. At that particular time, the Marine Corps was known as the Elite Corps as attempt was made at bringing it down to 100, 000 men but that was scrubbed with the ensuing wars that followed. He spent a total of two years on the Hawaiian Islands and it was during his service that the Toys for Tots campaign was founded, a charity he happily supported over the years. Bob planned to be a career marine until he became disabled with MS - however he was called back when the Korean War broke out when Marines were called back alphabetically. It was his commandant of the Corps who coined the phrase Once a Marine, always a Marine. On return to civilian life Bob studied at the Norm Prescott School of Radio & Television as a newscaster and Scott Carbee School of Art in Boston. graduation from NPS he attended a few acting classes, liked it so much that he decided it was the life for him! Needing to be in and out of VA hospitals over the next few years however, his hopes of becoming a first rate actor diminished. In later years Bob auditioned as a movie extra and after that the rest is history. He did eighteen episodes of Spencer for Hire after which 50 or more extra parts ensued. He could be seen in major movies including AMISTAD under the direction of Steven Spielberg and MYSTIC RIVER when director Clint Eastwood personally thanked him for his first take. Bob also enjoyed his many chats with actors including Jack Worden, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon in EVERYONES A WINNER. He joined Screen Actors Guild after his third Spencer for Hire and later became a member of AFTRA (American Federation of Television & Radio Actors). He was then seen in commercials including a bank commercial at Annisquam Light and in many community theater productions where he excelled in musicals, his forte, having sung and danced with the best. Bob has said his experience in movies and theatre was a very good run, also his five years with the North Shoremen in Beverly where he sang with men doing their best in close harmony. Bob was retired from the City of Gloucester where he spent many years as head lifeguard for all city beaches, later was the Elementary School Lunch storekeeper for the Gloucester School Department. Bob was a 57 year Mason and member of the Gloucester Elks. Survivors include his wife of 57 years Marilyn, children Alison D wife of Bruce Martin of Berlin NH, William I husband of Larn Chin of Beverly MA and Brek A husband of Kim Heard of Gloucester. Special grandchildren include Felicia, Amanda, Rachael, Mariah and Nicholas Beard; great grandchildren Armani and Ashanti; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was the brother-in-law of Donald & Joyce Bruni of Boca Raton FL. services are private with burial at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to Toys for Tots, 23 Drydock Ave., Boston, MA 02210, toysfortots.org or the DAV, 12 Emerson Ave, Gloucester.
