Obituary: Marietta J. Buck, 91, of Portland, ME passed away on 23, 2016 at St. Josephs Manor. She was born on May 14, 1925 in Waterville, ME the daughter of Diendonne and Marie Helene (Roy) Poirier. Marietta was a nurse by profession and spent her life providing care for all of those around her even during her stay at St Josephs Manor. Marietta had many passions in life which included her Catholic faith which meant everything to her. She was involved in church activities, events and planning. She taught catechism to the young children at Saint Pius for many years making sure to share her love of the church. She was also involved in many prayer groups and study sessions both as a student and as a teacher; always willing to sit down and share a prayer with you. Her religious life was more than just words, she lived the life every day. She was an artist working with oil paints creating murals that would cover entire rooms transporting you to a different time and place when you walked into the room. Each of her children, along with many friends and family members proudly own and display pieces that she painted over the years. She was extremely involved politically and standing by her views without wavering. A staunch Republican most family and friends had a standing policy of never engaging her in a conversation of politics. Whenever there was anybody in need she would be the first one to offer help. She organized a donation system for the needy collecting furniture, clothing and various household items to distribute. She helped out in the soup kitchen and frequently reached out to those less fortunate or facing tough times. She had an open door policy but especially at Christmas when she always found a place at the table for anyone without family. Marietta loved to travel and has been through Europe multiple times as well as traveling all over the United States and Canada. But her traveling did not have to be a long distance to make her happy, going for a car ride just to see the foliage or a trip along the coastline would be enough to make her smile. Through her entire life she was involved in learning always taking a class here or there to advance her knowledge. When not in classes she could be found at a camp site or volunteering for different organizations. Marietta is survived by her children Paul Buck, Susan Waterman, Wayne Buck, Judy Buckingham, Janice Waterman and Emily Penney; 13 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester L. Buck and a son Stanley Buck. The family would like to invite you to a funeral service to be held at Jones, Rich & Hutchins , 199 Woodford St, Portland ME on 29th at 11:00am immediately followed by a celebration of life gathering for family and friend to share their memories.
