Obituary: David Pillsbury Becker Museum Curator, Philanthropist, Dies in Scarborough SCARBOROUGH -- David Becker died on Nov. 26, 2010, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough. He was born in Albany, N.Y., on Oct. 15, 1947, and educated at The Albany Academy, the Taft School, and Bowdoin from which he graduated in 1970 with a degree in history. While there, he discovered the Bowdoin Museum of Art and began developing an interest in art and especially printmaking. In 1983 he received a master of arts degree from New York University. In addition to receiving a Chester Dale Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, David did coursework at the University of Virginias Rare Book School in 1999 and 2009. David was most recently employed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where he was the Pamela and Peter Voss Curator of Prints and Drawings. David demonstrated exceptional organizational and political abilities in his professional career as a collector and curator of prints, drawings, and rare books. His publications include The Imprint of Place: Maine Printmaking 1800-2005 and numerous scholarly articles. He lectured on many subjects and taught Art History, History of Print Making, and the History of Graphic Design at Bowdoin and Bates and the Maine of Art. David was a trustee of the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and a board member with the Haymarket Fund, the Working Group on Funding Lesbian and Gay Issues of the National Network of Grantmakers, and the Lesbian and Gay Community of Boston. While on the board of the Maine Community Foundation, David was instrumental in establishing the Maine Equity Fund whose mission is to provide funding for further development of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations in Maine. David was founder of OUT-A Fund for Gay and Lesbian Liberation. He also served as a member of the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust. David was a steadfast supporter of Bowdoin , its Museum of Art and other Bowdoin organizations. In 2010, David was the recipient of Bowdoins Alumni Service Award, the highest honor given by the Bowdoin Alumni Council. The award was presented in recognition of Davids four decades of service to the , including as an overseer (1986-96); as a trustee (1996-98); as a member of the Visiting Committee and Collections Committee for the Museum of Art (1992); and as a member of the Bowdoin Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association. The award also recognized Davids enormous generosity to the , including a gift to establish the Becker Print Gallery in memory of his parents; donations to support Museum of Art renovations; and endowed funds and projects in support of the Museum, Bowdoins Library, photography, music, the South African Scholarship Fund, and the Lesbian and Gay Lectureship Fund. Davids activist philanthropy in the greater community was recognized by The Maine Lesbian/Gay Political Alliances (now Equality Maine) Great Pioneer Award in 1994 and by Maine Initiatives Golden Grower Philanthropist Award in 2001. David also financially and politically supported many other progressive social change organizations including the Astraea Foundation and the Proud Rainbow Youth of Southern Maine (PRYSM). David is survived by his brother, John J. Becker of Pittsboro, N.C., his sister, Katherine B. Finney of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 10 nieces and nephews. David leaves many friends and professional colleagues around New England, the U.S. and beyond. A celebration of Davids life will be held on , Dec. 11, 2010, at 2 p.m., in the Studzinski Recital Hall at Bowdoin in Brunswick. Obituary: LISBON: Patrick Rusty J. Beck, 67, of Lisbon, passed away night at his home in Lisbon. He was born on 22, 1946 in Amsterdam, NY a son of the late Charles and Muriel (Bedard) Beck. He spent a short time as a child in New York before moving to Maine. He attended schools in Maine and was a graduate of Fryeburg Academy, class of 1964. high school, Rusty took some college courses and worked as a chef for several years. In the mid 1970s, he went to work at Bath Iron Works in the Tin Shop Dept. 17 for over 35 years until his retirement in 2010. Rusty was a member of the Masonic Order as well as a volunteer fire fighter for the Lisbon Fire Dept. He served the town of Lisbon as a Selectman and even ran for State Representative. He will always be remembered for his joy of harness racing and all New England sports. He also loved spending quality time with his family and enjoyed cooking very much. He is survived by his five children; Rudy Langelier and his wife Cindy of Leeds, Larry Langelier of Sumner, Chuck Hessel of Mt. Vernon, OH, Stephanie Hessel and Jay Beck of Lisbon. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Cassidy and Randi-Anne Langelier, L.J. and Lacey Langelier and Amy Arsenault as well as his 3 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Meredith Beck, a daughter Tania Russell and a brother Brian Beck. Obituary: .Auburn - Rita Rose (Lebel) Bechard, 83 of Lewiston passed away at the Hospice House of Androscoggin and Hospice with family by her side, 27, 2010. The daughter of Roseanne Moreau and Thomas Lebel, she was educated in Lewiston schools. She married Joseph Armand Bechard on 4, 1945 and worked briefly at Bates Mill and Hillcrest then was a stay at home mom. She liked to play cards, go for walks and do jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by her two daughters, Jeannette Duchette and husband Paul of Lewiston and Susan Bennett and husband Gary of New Gloucester; six grandchildren, Arlene Pride and Alison Hill of Lewiston, Doug Bronk of Sabattus, Jessica Cartier, Monica Sackett and Darcy Cartier all of New York. 18 great grandchildren, and 2 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, both parents and 2 brothers, Armand and Rene Lebel and 6 sisters, Muriel Hall, Jacqueline Whitehouse, Pat Frappier, Lena Frappier, Gert Crowley and Cecile Brown.
