Obituary: Phyllis Barstow, 97, of Norridgewock, passed away 26, 2014 in Skowhegan, Maine. Phyllis was a recent recipient of the Boston Post Cane. She was born 14, 1917 in Dexter, Maine, the daughter of Philip E. and Florence (Parker) Barstow. Phyllis graduated from Edward Little High School in the class of 1935 and then attended the Farmington State Teachers graduating in 1938. She spent most of her career teaching in Lewiston and was later employed with the Department of Human Services in Skowhegan. She was a past member of the Sunset Chapter of the OES in Skowhegan, a member of the Norridgewock Village Improvement Society, Norridgewock Historical Society, Extension maker, and the Skowhegan Womens Club. She also served on the Norridgewock Library Board for many years. Phyllis was a very independent woman who took care of herself, her family, her friends and her community. The Town of Norridgewock dedicated the Town Report to Phyllis in 1999. She is survived by her nieces; Brenda Obert and her husband David of Norridgewock, Linda Fox and her husband John of Richardson, Texas, Beth Luce and her husband Norman of Starks, her nephew Horace Barstow and his wife Barbara of Norridgewock, Mary Brown and her husband Weldon of Madison, Linda Griffin and her husband Paul of The Forks, and Tammy Locke and her husband Allen of Skowhegan and many grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers; Richard Barstow and Parker Jewett, her sister Joy Washburn, her grand-nephew Linwood Washburn. A graveside service will be held in the summer at the Southside in Skowhegan. The family would like to thank the staff of the Cedar Ridge for the wonderful care Phyllis received. are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards , 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Obituary: Frederick C. Barstow, 84, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on , 6, 2015, at the Maine Medical in Portland after suffering a stroke. He was born on 13, 1930, in Massena, N.Y., the son of Ray and Helen Barstow. His father worked in the family hardware store, and he had two brothers and a sister. He was a proud Eagle Scout. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1952 with a degree in geology. At Dartmouth he was co-captain of the ski team and developed into one of the nations finest alpine ski racers. He would continue racing well into his 60s, and he remained devoted to Dartmouth his entire life. It was at Dartmouth that he met his wife, Dorothy Doffie Tibbott of Newton, Mass., then a student at Mount Holyoke . married in 1953 and shared the next 61 years. graduate studies at McGill University in Canada and a few years of service in the U.S. Army, he eventually settled in Concord, Mass., where he raised his family, attended the Trinitarian Congregational Church and worked for nearly 30 years at the Polaroid Corporation. He collaborated closely with Polaroids co-founder, Dr. Edwin H. Land, and he was part of the team that developed Polaroids popular SX-70 camera. He earned several patents for inventions related to film and film processes. retiring, he and Doffie moved up to Maine, living in Bath, Brunswick and finally Cape Elizabeth. In addition to alpine and cross-country skiing, he was an avid cyclist, sailor, hiker, fly-fisher and canoeist. He adored taking photographs, especially of his family. He patiently hand crafted beautiful furniture in his garage shop. He also carved some of the most elegant giant slalom turns ever seen at Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire. No one ever made a better bowl of popcorn. More than anything, he enjoyed teaching those he loved most the things he loved best. He was predeceased by five beloved canine companions - Cindy, Rufus, Annie, Sammie and Toby. He is survived by his wife Doffie and his four children, Brewer Barstow and Polly Wanzer, both of Portland, Maine; David Barstow of Glen Ridge, New Jersey,and Chris Barstow of Bethel, Maine. He is also survived by his brothers Tom and Russell and by his seven grandchildren: Tricia Rose, 26; Dylan Barstow, 24; Maeliosa Barstow, 20; Lucy Wanzer, 18; Sam Wanzer, 14; Lucas Barstow, 8, and Rosie Barstow, 6. He also left three daughter-in-laws -- Jean Barstow, Debbie Barstow and Nancy Barstow -- and a son-in-law, Steve Wanzer. A celebration of Fred's life will be held at 11 a.m. on May 2, 2015 at First Parish Church in Brunswick, Maine.
